Rice Alliance Clean Energy Accelerator Launching at The Ion in 2021

At the conclusion of the 18th Annual Rice Alliance Energy Tech Venture Forum, the Rice Alliance, joined by Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, Rice University President David Leebron, Wells Fargo Foundation’s Jenny Flores and Bob Harvey, President and CEO of the Greater Houston Partnership, announced the launch of a Clean Energy Accelerator in Houston to support early-stage startups that are building solutions for a cleaner, more efficient and sustainable future.

Rice Alliance will leverage its existing relationships with energy corporations and energy investors, as well as its 20 years of experience supporting, mentoring and educating high growth tech startups, through programs such as the Rice Business Plan Competition, energy tech venture forums and OwlSpark accelerator, to expand its impact and more deeply support the energy transition. The accelerator’s lead supporter is Wells Fargo, and is supported by eleven founding energy firms and six community supporters.

Putting Momentum Behind Momentous Ideas

The accelerator provides startups access to Rice Alliance's network of energy corporations, investors and advisors. With an engaged support network and personalized mentor relationships, startups will also experience curriculum and programming intentionally designed to increase their likelihood of success—bridging the gap between ideas and commercial business success. Once through the program, startups will be better positioned to attract capital and launch pilot programs and other initiatives, which can be facilitated through accelerator connections.

Applications will open in early 2021
Houston is building an innovation ecosystem that can develop creative solutions to address our toughest challenges. This new Clean Energy Accelerator aligns with the momentum already happening in Houston to further the energy transition and will be based at The Ion startup hub. We believe that it's a fully collaborative approach that will lead to accelerating energy innovation and sustainable solutions. Our founding supporters and champions will help make this a reality:
