Smash Mouth Burgers a smashing success

Jamie Parsons and Nichole Barnett are joining the all-star lineup of Cape Region food trucks with Smash Mouth Burgers.

“The smashed burger concept is not new, but no one else is doing it around here,” Parsons said. “There’s taco trucks and other types of trucks, and I just knew this would take off.”

The menu features five variations such as the Farmhouse burger with jalapeno jam, Taylor ham and a sunny egg with American cheese, and the Santa Fe burger with shredded lettuce, pico, avocado, chipotle mayo and green chili queso.

Blind golfer holes two aces!

By Gene Bleile
First the good news, if you have had the good fortune to shoot a hole-in-one, then you belong to an exclusive club of golfers, both pro and amateur. Now for the bad news, your accomplishment was upstaged by a blind woman golfer, named Margaret Waldron, who shot a hole-in-one on two consecutive days, on the Long Point Golf Course, located in Amelia Island, Florida.

In 2012, I joined the PGA hole-in-one club, with my very first ace, and for years, I have felt pretty good about my achievement, until my ongoing research into golf for my weekly column uncovered this unbelievable feat in 1990.

At age 74, Mrs. Waldron not only scored an ace on an 87-yard par three for her first hole-in-one ever, but the next day, on the same hole she did it again.

Happy first anniversary, Shaka Shack!

Shaka Shack will hold its first year Anniversary Celebration Friday, Sept. 18 through Sunday, Sept. 20. The takeout restaurant will have food specials, drawings, giveaways and coupons. Free delicious cake balls will be given out with each meal purchase while supplies last.

Shaka is a hand gesture in which the thumb and little finger are extended outward from a closed fist. It is used as a greeting or to express approval, solidarity and more. In the 1960s, surfers adopted the Shaka sign from Hawaiians, and it has spread around the world. It is part of the surf culture.

Owner Clay Reynolds is a man of few words and an avid surfer, and the Shaka represents the positive, laidback vibe he expels. Many of his recipes were passed down from his grandparents, who started Pitchcroft Restaurant on Smith Island in the early 1970s.
