Copper and Silver Plating for Aviation (& other Industries)
|
|
What is Copper and Silver plating? |
Copper is a common metal the plating industry utilizes for several benefits to a substrate. It has the capabilities to be applied to various metals both metallic and non-metallic in nature through the electroplating process.
Silver like copper plating is applied to several different types of materials for both decorative and functional purposes. It can be bright or matte in appearance, accompanied by its softer coating, it tends to be utilized differently than harder coatings such as Nickel or Chrome. |
|
How do we apply Copper and Silver plating? |
Both coatings are applied in their respective chemical make up baths using an electroplating process. DC power is applied to the part in order to absorb and create a bond between the substrate and the metal. Deposits can vary depending on the application and requirements for each individual part. Traditionally deposits of 0.0002”-0.0004” are utilized. However, it is not uncommon to see much heavier deposits applied exceeding over 0.001” or greater. |
|
What aviation components typically receive Copper or Silver plating? |
For copper, parts that traditionally require this coating are looking at having bearing or seal journals brought back to dimensional requirements. Specific parts such as PTO gears, Inner races and Input/output shafts all require copper plating to restore areas to allow tight seals on mating pieces. Copper is also widely used as a prestrike plating for other coatings such as silver and even Chrome on materials such as aluminum.
Silver has a wider range of parts to service within the Aviation industry. Common practice of restoring nuts, bolts and washers, bearing races, as well as countless gears for dimensional restoration on journals, threads, splines and gear teeth are some of the most frequent repairs to utilize the silver plating process. |
|
What are the major benefits to Copper and Silver plating? |
Copper offers a variety of benefits to numerous industries. Its solderability, conductivity, corrosion resistance and soft sealable coatings are some of the major reasons copper is a chosen plating process. Accompanied by its compatibility with several other plating processes, copper plating can be found as a go to coating for processes extending beyond traditional copper plating.
Silver has one of the highest electrical conductivity capabilities compared to other metals. Outstanding solderability and resistance to corrosion and bacterial growths. Although silver can easily tarnish there are several methods available to the electroplating process to minimize the tarnished appearance as well as the ability to be easily polished. Its press fit capabilities accompanied by a deposited metal content of 99.99% silver directly onto the plated part all play a roll in its benefits to Aviation industry requirements. |
