Find your creative community online at BARN

Just because we can’t physically hang out together at BARN right now doesn’t mean we can’t continue to share and create with others. BARN studios are offering free opportunities to go online via Zoom to share ideas, get help with current projects, and just socialize.

Fiber Arts was first to do so, with their weekly “Virtual Slow Stitch Tuesday” sessions. Studio member Dale Walker started the group as a mailing list in late March, when she realized how much she was missing her Fiber Arts community at BARN. In May she took the meeting online. Since then the number of participants has grown, as has their geographic range. “People tend to pop in and out – maybe they come in at the beginning just to say hi, or they join later to show whatever they’re working on and sometimes to ask for help with an issue with their current project,” Dale said. “It's social, basically, so we talk about a lot of things while we work.” The group is focused primarily on hand work, and that can include everything from embroidery and sewing to knitting, weaving and more. And new participants have joined in from as far away as North Carolina and eastern British Columbia. “We’re no longer limited by geography,” Dale explained. She added that the Fiber Arts group at BARN has always placed a high priority on building community, so these online sessions fit right in.

The Woodworkers are also offering a monthly opportunity to share your woodworking successes and challenges in the twice-monthly Woodworker Online Gathering, held on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month. The sessions usually begin with a small bit of prepared content, and then open for a group discussion.

Writers can go online every Tuesday and Thursday for the virtual revival of the popular Word Sprints. It’s a weekly time to write in the company of others. There’s no sharing or critiques, only fast-paced, supportive productivity led by a rotating team of hosts. It's a fun way to break out of a bout of writer’s block or to hold yourself to a writing schedule.

The newest addition is in the Jewelry studio. Jewelry Online Connections offers an informal way to gather and share. The first session, scheduled for September 30, will start with a discussion of Setting Up Your Home Workspace hosted by Chris Stanley and Joan Hammond. This session will conclude with an invitation to participate in the Hand Medal Project. This project offers a way for the jewelry-making community to show our appreciation for essential workers. For complete instructions, including a template for cutting out the medals from silver, copper, or brass, go here. Come to the session with a medal or two already made, or get inspired by what the other participants have made!

All of these sessions are free to everyone – you don’t need to be a BARN member to join in. Feel free to log into an upcoming meetup and just listen in!
