Dear VMIAC members,

Nothing About Us, Without Us!
VMIAC are dedicated to providing a voice to those Victorians who have a lived experience of mental and emotional distress. Check out this week's newsletter to see some of the ways we are championing those voices.
We understand that the content of this newsletter is more difficult to read then our usual updates. If you have lived experience of mental health or emotional distress and are also having trouble coping during COVID-19, contact our peer support workers through our CHECK-IN connection and support program. Find out more here!
CHECK-IN is not a crisis service. If you, or someone you know is in crisis, please call Lifeline or Beyond Blue.

Media Release. This week a 32-year old father of three with a lived experience of mental distress was left in a coma after a brutal confrontation with the Victorian Police. To read VMIAC’s response to this appalling abuse of police powers, read our media release here.

Watch our latest consumer video, "My Experience in Seclusion" by Julie Dempsy. Coming off the back of our Seclusion Report #2, this video gives a powerful and personal insight into the experience of seclusion and why we need to work together to #EndSeclusion. Watch it here!

Media Release. In yet another example of police being both mentally and physically unprepared to deal with those experiencing mental and emotional distress, a 24-year old man was shot by police whilst experiencing emotional distress. This raises the question as to whether police should be first responders to these particular incidents. Read our full media release here.
