THE EDUCATION ISSUE

(Re)Confirming Director Dwane Chappelle to Lead the Department of Education & Early Learning

Earlier this month, I had the honor of sponsoring the re-confirmation of Dwane Chappelle as Director of the Department of Education and Early Learning (DEEL). On September 8, 2020, the Seattle City Council unanimously confirmed Director Chappelle to continue leading DEEL.  Congratulations to Director Chappelle, who is a tireless champion and advocate for Seattle’s students and their families and our collective pursuit for educational justice for those furthest away from opportunity.  I look forward to continuing to work with Director Chappelle, his amazing staff, labor, education partners, and Seattle families across the City of Seattle to improve education access for our kids!

UPDATE: Your Families, Education, Preschool and Promise Levy at Work

I believe that the City of Seattle has an important role to play through investing in our young people so they can access economic opportunities to thrive. Many of the City’s investments are in partnership with Seattle Public Schools to complement and build upon “seat time” instruction from SPS so our kids can spend more time learning. Moreover, the Families, Education, Preschool, and Promise (FEPP) Levy has an explicit prioritization to invest in Black students, Indigenous students, students of color and English Language Learners as another effort to close the opportunity gap.

DEEL recently joined my Governance and Education Committee to provide an update on funding of the voter-approved FEPP Levy. The City has gotten multiple funds out the door to invest in early learning expansion, K-12 supports, and access to college via Seattle Promise. I am thrilled to see my priorities in early learning expansion and addressing student homelessness working to meet the needs of Seattle families.

Here is a snapshot of FEPP investments we’ve made to date. To learn more about DEEL’s funding awards and opportunities, click here.

Back to School: Remote Edition

The start of this school year is unlike any other. As our city (and the entire world) continues to weather the COVID-19 pandemic, adjustments have been made in every facet of our lives. Starting this school year has been no different.

With the remote start, Seattle Public Schools has been working hard to help families access the technology and broadband needs for students to join the virtual classroom.

Families can get help with the following:

ICYMI:
Preschool, Childcare & Teen Resource Hubs

Earlier this month, the City of Seattle announced the availability of an additional 550 childcare slots and the opening of Teen Resource Hubs thanks to the Seattle Department of Parks and Recreation and Seattle Preschool Program. In case you missed the news, here are the essential details!

The Seattle Preschool Program (SPP) is accepting new participants! Families with three or four-year-olds can apply now to enroll in the City’s high quality early learning program from one of our amazing SPP providers.  Tuition for SPP is on a sliding scale.  You can learn more here.

DEEL has announced capacity to serve an additional 100 families through the Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP). Families can apply for CCAP here. Additional childcare support is available for families; scholarships are available, and there are slots that are still open! To apply, go here

Seattle Parks and Recreation is operating seven Teen Resource Hubs across the city.  These hubs will support up to 200 students daily and will provide those furthest away from educational justice with a free opportunity for support with Seattle Public Schools virtual learning, WiFi access, provide in-person support for connectivity, and access to recreational, enrichment, and mentoring programs. The program began on September 8, 2020, and will run Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided daily. Participants need to register for the free program online by visiting www.seattle.gov/parks
