Opening of the Academic Year 2020-2021
The Academic Year has started again. However much we had hoped that everyone could be at their physical workplace again by September 1st, working remote will also continue for a large part this academic year. This applies to the LNVH as well. We wish everyone strength and good luck this year. Let’s make sure AY2020-2021 will be a good year! We invite you to take a look at the summary of the AOJ-festival on the VSNU website and see which themes will be at the centre of attention for universities this year. WOinActie organized an alternative opening of the new academic year. With the 'Tour of Academics', they drew attention to the outflow of talented teaching staff because of the precarious position they are in and the many temporary contracts and appointments they have to deal with.

Research impact COVID-19 Closing date survey
LNVH and The Young Academy (DJA) are, together with the Association of Universities in the Netherlands (VSNU), conducting research into the differences in impact of the Covid-19 crisis on the careers of scientists. As part of this research, a survey was conducted among academic staff of the universities and research institutes of the KNAW. DJA and LNVH are very pleased with the valuable cooperation of all universities and the KNAW. If you are part of the academic staff, you should have received a call (e-mail) to fill in the survey via your own Executive Board in the last few weeks. If you have received the call to fill in the survey, but not yet been able to do so, it would be highly appreciated if you could complete the questionnaire before it closes at the end of week 38.

Launch National Action Plan Diversity and Inclusion
On September 1st, the National Action Plan for Diversity and Inclusion in Higher Education and Research has been launched by the minister of Education, Culture and Science, Ingrid van Engelshoven. The aim of the action plan is to contribute to an inclusive, safe, and diverse study and work environment, which provides everyone with the opportunity to develop their talents. The action plan contributes to equal opportunities for students and researchers and the quality of education and research, and also emphasizes the importance of diversity of research subjects, objects and content.
The LNVH has been proud knowledge partner in the process of drawing up this action plan, together with the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO), the Royal Netherlands Academy for Arts and Sciences (KNAW), the Association of Universities in the Netherlands (VSNU), ECHO - Expertise Centre Diversity Policy, and LanDo (the National Network of Diversity Officers). Promovendi Netwerk Nederland (PNN) and PostdocNL also expressed their committed to the plan. The LNVH is pleased with this new and promising step and the commitment to the goals from all parties. We are looking forward to the concrete actions that will follow to the launch of the plan. On October 1st an advisory committee, chaired by VU rector Vinod Subramaniam, will start working on the implementation of the plan by supporting the ministry and the committed parties within academia in achieving the goals determined in the plan. The members of the advisory committee will be officially introduced on October 1st.

On October 27th, the annual LNVH Affiliates’ meeting will take place online. The Affiliates’ Meeting is an occasion for LNVH affiliates to come together and meet each other. Usually this takes place in the form of an evening programme with a dinner and several speakers. Unfortunately, this year we will have to come together online. We are nevertheless working hard on creating an interesting programme and a great occasion to meet each other. The theme of the evening is New Leadership. Leadership in the academic world is changing, especially during current times. We are seeing many changes in the context of ‘Recognition and rewards’ and we are all dealing with a crisis that is asking a lot of leaders and leadership. It is a great moment to think about this 'new' leadership: what does it look like, and what role can (or must) we have in it ourselves? During the meeting, there will also be a moment of attention for the new LNVH Leadership Programme, called ‘Transformative Leadership’.
More information will follow and for now, please reserve October 27th (afternoon) in your agenda – we hope to welcome many of our affiliates online.

Naming suggestions follow-up NWO programme ‘Mosaic’
Currently, NWO is developing an impulse programme for Inclusion in Academia (IIA), which consists of various components. The aim of the impulse programme is to promote the inclusion of Dutch researchers with a non-Western migration background into the Dutch academy. One of the components is the development of a follow-up to the Mosaic programme. The Mosaic programme ran from 2004 to 2012 and aimed to encourage the flow of graduates with a migration background into science by funding PhD positions. The follow-up programme will be launched in the spring of 2021.
NWO is looking to rename this programme and is putting out a call for suggestions. What would be a suitable name for this programme? Read more about the requirements here.
Suggestions for the new name including the reasons can be submitted at mozaiek@nwo.nl no later than 28 September. [source: nwo.nl]
