Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Last month we released a report which found police bodies in England are largely opposed to the Home Office proposals to criminalise trespass. We were delighted to see an overwhelming majority of the respondents made repeated calls for better site provision for Gypsies and Travellers.

It is clear that evicting people who have nowhere to go is an answer for nothing. It is the police who will be in a position to enforce this, and if they don't believe it's the right way to go then policy makers should hear this as a clear signal to change direction.

We will face new challenges in the Autumn and we will do all we can to ensure Gypsies, Roma and Travellers are not forgotten in the ongoing pandemic response. Do keep yourselves and your families safe.

Warmest wishes,

Sarah Mann
Director

Update from our casework:

"Before the country went into lockdown in March, one of our clients had been in hospital. Lockdown came in, and following an improper housing needs assessment, the duty of care ended for this person. They were in shared accommodation which wasn't suitable due to health conditions which made the individual vulnerable to Covid-19. We tried to get the needs assessment reassessed, and the council wouldn't review. When we received legal support the council finally put the individual into appropriate, secure housing. They are so relieved to have safe accommodation."
