A40 London Road Corridor Improvements Project
National Productivity Investment Fund

The project seeks to improve journey time reliability and ease congestion on the A40 London Road through the delivery of a range of improvements including junction changes, introduction of new traffic management technology, bus stop improvements and the optimisation of bus lane locations.

This phase of works is focusing on junction construction and builds on the work already completed to date including improvements already made including new CCTV, refurbishment of all signalised pedestrian crossings, variable message signs and queue detection sensors. The stretch from Easton Street to Loudwater includes junction improvements at the Gordon Road, Hatters Lane, Micklefield Road with Ryemead Way and Gomm Road junctions. When all works are fully completed, it will mean better and more reliable journeys for all who use this key route in and out of the town centre.

Recent Works

London Road/ Micklefield Road/ Ryemead Way/ Cock Lane/ London Road junction

An advanced temporary traffic signal system is currently in place and to control the junction during construction works. This system replicates the existing setup exactly by plugging into the permanent signal control cabinets. The traffic signals are connected to each other, and to the control cabinets by overhead cables.

Construction has been continuing at various locations around the junction, and the following works have been carried out:

Works within the southern footway to divert existing utility services, install new kerbs to allow for the widening of London Road, and base surfacing material laid;
Site clearance works to remove existing traffic islands and installation of kerbs at new traffic island locations;
Traffic signal refurbishments - new signal poles installed and cabling installed in to link and co-ordinate the new permanent traffic signals.

Upcoming Works and Traffic Management

London Road/ Micklefield Road/ Ryemead Way/ Cock Lane junction

Work will begin next week to resurface areas of the junction to tie-in new areas of widened carriageway and newly constructed traffic islands with the existing road surface. Due to the high traffic flows and pedestrians using the junction, it has been decided to complete this work during night shifts. By carrying out work when traffic and pedestrian flows are lower, there will be less of an impact to the network and create a safer working environment. We apologise for any inconvenience these works may have on local residents.

Work is planned for 4 nights (plus 1 night contingency) from Monday 21st September, with the working hours from 7pm to approximately 12am. Lane closures will be in place on the approaches to the junction at various times and locations throughout the works, but 2 way traffic flows will always be maintained.

In addition to the junction resurfacing, works will also be continuing on the following:

Final surfacing layer installed on the southern footway;
Construction of new traffic and pedestrian crossing islands;
Continued refurbishment of the traffic signal infrastructure.
