Campus Services Newsletter: Fall 2020

Aedwards Los Banos

Aloha Campus Services ‘ohana,

I’d like to thank all of you for demonstrating such resiliency and cooperation during this unprecedented time. While many of us have been teleworking, students, faculty, and staff have still needed access to the many products that Campus Services provides. I’m proud of how our departments have adjusted to meet these needs through innovative and collaborative solutions.

Here are just a few notable examples:

  • To supply students with fall semester course materials in a safe manner, the Mānoa Bookstore offered various options, including ship-to-home, curbside delivery, and smart locker pickup. Thank you to everyone who volunteered to assist with the fall rush period.
  • To make coming to campus as convenient and risk-free as possible, Commuter Services offered contactless daily and monthly parking options, which allow for flexible use of available spaces.
  • To promote health and safety, Campus Services led the effort to assemble over 24,000 kits and to date distributed 13,000 COVID-CARE kits to the UH Mānoa community.

I especially want to thank our frontline staff (including our hardworking DPS officers), who must regularly interact with the public. Not only have they provided excellent customer service, but they have also modeled and enforced appropriate health and safety behaviors.  I encourage all of you to stay safe and do your part to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Doing so will protect our Campus Services ‘ohana as well as the larger community.

With aloha,
Aedward Los Banos
Associate Vice President for Administration
Interim Director of Campus Services

COVID-CARE Kits

The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Administration is offering complimentary COVID-CARE kits to UH Mānoa students, faculty, and staff. Supplies for these kits were selected by Aedward Los Banos and Tricia Ejima-Zane. Each kit contains a digital thermometer, disinfecting wipes, hand sanitizer, and reusable cloth face masks. Ann Yamauchi and Nicki Neimy supervised the assembly of over 24,000 COVID-CARE kits with volunteers from various campus departments. Julie Uyeno-Pidot has been reaching out to department contacts to find out how many kits they need, while Ann and Victor Lomupo have been batching the kits and giving them to Campus Mail Services to deliver. Thank you to everyone who has assisted with this project!

Aloha United Way Campaign

UH Mānoa’s 2020 Aloha United Way campaign runs through Friday, October 9. This year’s campaign is especially important because of the comprehensive support services that AUW provides to those impacted by COVID-19. Since most employees are teleworking, donating through the ePledge site is encouraged (click here for directions). For each dollar you donate, you’ll receive an entry to win a quarantine survival pack. The winner will be announced on Monday, October 12.

Speaking of winners, congratulations to Naomi Fujii for winning the Hawaiʻi Foodbank quarantine prize pack! Thank you to everyone who participated in this fundraiser. Together, we were able to gather $400 in donations.

COVID Prevention Decals

Campus Solutions is excited to launch their own line of COVID-prevention decals. In Memoriam: DPS Sgt. Patrick Movery

We are sad to announce the recent passing of DPS Sergeant Patrick Movery. Movery was well known and loved by many on the UH Mānoa campus during his decades of service. He will be missed for his smile, his friendship, and his love for family and community.

Movery, who was originally from Jamaica, was a Marine Corps veteran with 29 years of service at UH Mānoa. In 2010, Movery was recognized by Top Cop Hawaiʻi for thwarting a series of bicycle and moped thefts throughout the campus, and for his leadership in first aid and CPR training on campus.

“Sgt. Movery left an indelible mark on this department, the university and individuals he came in contact with,” said DPS Chief Andrew Black. “He was a dedicated leader, mentor to young officers and served the university with aloha. He was beloved and will be sorely missed.” Click here to view full memorial post on the UH News website.

What is your favorite part of your job?
My favorite part is that my job never gets boring! There are new things to learn and solve almost every day! Even more so now with the current pandemic.

How have you had to adjust your work duties due to COVID-19?
By nature, I am a social person and love interacting with people one on one. Due to social and physical distancing, I’ve had to learn how to assist people over the phone and online instead of in-person interactions while still offering the same level of service.

What’s your go-to takeout spot?
Currently, I’m on the ketogenic diet and often get takeout from Aloha Salads. On my cheat days, my go-to takeout spot is Panda Express.

What are you doing for fun during the current stay-at-home period?
I’m a huge fan of Marie Kondo and home organization. Recently, I’ve been working on home improvement projects and decluttering items that don’t bring me joy in life.

Once it’s safe to travel again, where would you like to go?
It has always been a dream of mine to take a trip to Japan. Hopefully one day I can make this dream come true. If not, Disneyland is a runner up.
