Dear Catholic School Families,

Over the past several weeks, we have emphasized that your ongoing input into the safe operating practices of our schools is important.

Please take a minute to complete our Safety Pulse Survey. Your answers will help the Office of Catholic Schools and your school’s leadership focus on areas for improvement. This survey will be open through Wednesday, Sept. 23. We will provide new surveys every few weeks so we can assess our progress on meeting your expectations and addressing your concerns.

Additionally, I strongly encourage you and your family members to receive flu vaccinations this year. As you will see below and in material to be shared by your principal, there has never been a more important time to prevent the spread of flu. Our communities and health care systems are strained by the COVID-19 pandemic and a severe flu season will complicate an already difficult situation.

Together, we are working hard to practice positive behaviors to minimize the spread of COVID-19; we can do the same as we face the annual flu season. The more we do to protect ourselves and each other, the healthier our school communities will be throughout the school year.

As we enter fall, I encourage you to reach out to your principal and/or teachers to thank them for their service. Our Catholic educators have truly gone “above and beyond” and it is important that we recognize them for their incredible service. We are truly blessed with their dedication!

As always, I am grateful for your partnership and trust as we educate the young people of the Archdiocese.

Yours in Christ,

Jim Rigg, Ph.D.
Superintendent of Catholic Schools
FLU 2020
Prevent the flu: Get vaccinated

Please visit https://www.archchicago.org/news-and-events/flu-2020 for a video message from Cardinal Cupich and resources for our entire Archdiocesan family.

Did you know …
  • Some people who get the flu develop serious and potentially life-threatening medical complications, such as pneumonia.
  • Over the past decade, flu and pneumonia have been linked to an annual average of 3,500 deaths in Illinois.
  • Between 10 and 20 percent of Americans are infected during most flu seasons, which typically run from October through May.
  • More than 200,000 people are hospitalized by the flu each year in the U.S.
Flu vaccine is provided at many local health departments, private health care providers, and pharmacies across Illinois. Contact your health care provider to find out which flu vaccine is right for you. Find vaccine locations at vaccinefinder.org.
Good News Stories
Hope-filled and joyful stories are important for our mental, emotional and spiritual well-being. That’s why we want to help share the good news about your school community.

If your student’s class/cohort or school is doing something you know others would find creative, inspiring, or simply fun, please send an email to us at schoolmarketing@archchicago.org and we’ll share your story.

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month
Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15 – Oct. 15) celebrates the rich cultures and traditions of people who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico, and the Spanish-speaking countries of Central America, South America, and the Caribbean. Many Catholic schools are honoring these vibrant communities through classroom activities and celebrations.
