Recently, Colorado is experiencing a greater than 50 degree temperature drop and snow! I guess it is time to let go of summer! Speaking of letting go, I have chosen to let go of participating in the newly rescheduled Body, Mind Spirit (BMS) Expo after being a healer/vendor for 13 years. Additionally, I will not be teaching at Loveland Ski Area because, unfortunately, the women's program is not taking place this 20/21 season. Telemark skiing is a passion of mine and I have been teaching skiing for the last 37 years. Both of these will be reconsidered for 2021. They were tough decisions; however, right now I am focusing on helping people in new ways through new product development, a greater Internet presence and more personalized healing sessions that are not in the context of an expo/fair setting (please scroll down for details about setting up an appointment to come see me)! At this critical time on the planet, it's important to realize that it's time to awaken our inner alchemy to shift the denser energies into a higher vibration (heart centered energies). As we harmonize self, the collective naturally follows. A good internal "check in" question might be, "Am I coming from a place of love or a place of fear?" Now, more than ever it is truly important to be aware of when we feel division and recognize if it's pulling us into the undertow of fear. We are all unified in the energy of the collective consciousness and our individual energy contribution affects all. If you find yourself or others having a reaction to a situation such as judgement, anger, rage, anxiety, arrogance, depression, powerlessness, etc., the best thing you can do is back off and realize these expressions are fear based. I must admit I have danced the dance of feeling anxiety and depression as of lately. It is because I feel somewhat powerless to help the world out of the current situation; however, I do my best to come from a different energy when I feel bogged down with concerns about our world situation, our businesses and much more. Please keep in mind that if you are depressed, it is important to honor how you feel and take steps to help yourself (i.e., journaling, reaching out for help, etc.). In the context of the healing work I do, I am also able to help you navigate these uncertain times. Please do not hesitate to reach out. We are all grieving on some level!

Bringing growing back home, empowering agropreneurs, and taking local to the next level

In a TEDx Mile High Talk, former 3-time Olympian and health expert Jeff Olson describes the call of duty during World War II when Americans bonded together to grow over 40% of the country’s fruits and vegetables in “Victory Gardens.” The premise being, that larger agriculture ventures could go towards feeding our troops overseas.
But when the war was over, the gardens withered, and over the next two decades when the American family working-dynamic began to shift, there was another shift towards “agricultural imperialism.” This imperialism birthed a larger global agriculture, as the U.S. government emphasized to our small farmers to “get big or get out,” for high-production and low-margin growing.
Olson warns that modern “industrialized food is a tragedy of human health, an irony of ecology, and a paradox of economics.”
He continues that the solution to this terrible trifecta is the future of “closed-environment agriculture” (greenhouses) with a vertical twist.
Pioneered by the Dutch, and now adopted by most industrialized nations – including 2.8 million acres of greenhouses in China – greenhouse growing is a shift we are making globally towards feeding the world in a more sustainable way. But sadly, America is dead last in this effort. We used to be a net exporter of fruits and vegetables, and we are now the world's largest importer of produce.
While greenhouses can indeed be a viable solution, a better solution is a new kid on the block: vertical growing - a marriage of Jetson-like food technology with design wizardry of Steve Jobs. “If we can think different,” Olson says, “Enter the insurgent, divergent, convergent, emergent adaptation and innovation of growing food up in the air.”
We stand at the convergence of humanities and technology, and vertical aeroponics serves as nature with aerodynamic design. Imagine 43,000 square feet – an acre – of your favorite greens. Vertical aeroponics can do it in 4,000 square feet. That’s 90% less space, with 90% less water, giving three times the nutrient density in the plant. Used by NASA and studied by Universities around the world, vertical growing has proven efficiency time and again.
I recently went down to Florida to see the start of this revolution at Living Towers Farm just north of Orlando. For over six years, Jan Young’s organization has been growing “beyond organic” food for those in need, teaching the techniques of vertical growing to students and in-home gardeners, and selling quality food that “doesn’t have to cost the earth or have a negative impact on it.”
Even though Florida has the weather for outdoor gardening, it does not have the soil for it. Growing vertically yields more, and yields healthier plants. Young’s eggplants for instance yield 8-10 fruits on a regular basis- about ⅓ more yield than traditional gardening.
Seeing the vision of Living Towers in person, and pondering the economics of vertical growing, spins my imagination to what this could mean for a local economy. For example, an acre of commodity corn earns a farmer just $1,200; an acre of traditionally grown, organic food earns $12,000; and an acre of vertical aeroponics earns a quarter of a million dollars in revenue for one harvest, according to Olson.
Bringing the concept of Victory Gardens full circle, Olson has teamed up with an organization called Veterans to Farmers, which turns protectors into providers with an urban agricultural training program, creating “agropreneurs.” One of the program’s graduates launched the first vertical growing farm on the front range that sold out within a year of production, selling produce to front range fine dining restaurants.
“People are hungry for beautiful food,” Olson says. Despite being known as an agricultural state, 97% of Colorado’s leafy greens are imported from thousands of miles away. With just a 25% increase in Colorado-grown food shift, we’d see 31,000 new jobs bringing over a billion dollars in new wages.
In my own home, we have two commercialized, state-of-the-art vertical growing systems, as do many other friends and peers in town – the Tower Garden has been around six years and is fairly well known by now as an in-home solution to one of the shortest growing seasons on the planet.
However, it’s the larger installations that now inspire me. The vertical farms that are popping up around the country are something I would like to emulate. For you Denver readers, check out Altius Farms (www.altiusfarms.com), where 350 Tower Gardens sit atop a sushi restaurant in LoDo, covered in a true spectacle of greenhouse covering, and grow fresh green lettuces and herbs for over 40 restaurants in the area.
It is my hope that more and more large and small scale growers begin to see the value of bringing growing back home, using these state-of-the art aeroponic systems to do so. Not only for individuals, for families in need, and for restauranteurs who want fresh, nutrient dense produce.
