Letter from the Principal

Dear Abernethy Families,

As we wrap up our first 5 days of school following our 9 days of Soft Start, I would be remiss in not sending a warm note of thanks to the community for your ongoing support and encouragement. Our students and families are truly the best!  I have heard from many parents, guardians, grandparents, and extended family members lots of positive and helpful feedback for our implementation of Portland Public’s Comprehensive Distance Learning (CDL).

Thank you all for your grace, kind support, great suggestions, and communicating clear expectations in each situation. Each comment is read and acted upon immediately with either an “ATTA WAY” or a solution with an email response as soon as possible.

I am confident all of the hard work that transpired over the summer to make CDL possible is going to be worth the implementation efforts ensuring learning gains for all students  and a very different learning experience from spring. CDL is a core program and any other activities should be considered supplemental. This is a change from March-June 2019.

In just our first week of daily online learning, faculty, staff and I have heard stories and saw first hand many happy students connecting with peers, both old and new while practicing math skills. We saw students engaged in reading and writing along with getting the hang of the SeeSaw platform. We had a whooping 1645 interactions on SeeSaw in addition to interactive specialists classes. We do have many areas of positive momentum to build upon going into week two.

Unfortunately, we also had computers freeze up, teachers having to restart lessons, figure out new engagement/ learning routines, teachers working through new platforms in a handful of days after their professional development, and both teachers and families without their complete tech learning set up. Our teaching team has persisted despite some really challenging setbacks which began with no access to their classrooms for 7.5 school days due to power loss on Tuesday, September 8 due to the wind storms that took several days to fix before the smoke kept them at home.

We were all taking a day at a time but keeping the needs of our students top priority. ATTA WAY Faculty and Staff!

Our Information Technology team was on campus today unlocking document cameras and computers for our teachers to check out which was scheduled for last week. I can’t begin to tell you how happy my team was in the building today gathering the supplies they were supposed to have access to at the end of Soft Start. Yet, they stayed positive, resourceful, and resilient for each other and mostly for our students/families. We are here to serve you all to the best of our abilities each day as we prepare our students well for their next learning experience.

Overall, I was able to see all that occurred this week. Some things were working well for our students and in some other areas we have work to do with the support of district support staff. We are confident that next week will be even better as this first week could be considered an initial implementation dip. Our commitment to our students is for my staff and I to continue to ensure our K-5 graders will be accessing the learning as outlined in the district lessons provided in ATLAS for all subjects. (See this link here for the Parent Facing Portal to ATLAS to review learning objectives by grade level). You will notice that CDL is meant to be a true school online and in order for teachers to provide grades, students will need to be in attendance each day and completing work assignments that are being provided.

Lastly, the best and biggest  ATTA WAY goes  to the parents who are managing their work from home, helping students through the ups and downs of CDL, and are strong partners with their teacher.  We are with you every step of the way as educators and parents too. We will keep taking it one day at a time, one pivot at a time, and one week at a time. We will get there quickly!

Together WE Will make this a great year!

Sincerely,

Dr. Christie M. Petersen

Portland Public Schools Curriculum Site

How do I access the Portland Public Schools Family and Community Curriculum Site? Access ATLAS HERE
Our vision: A graduate of Portland Public Schools will be a compassionate critical thinker, able to collaborate and solve problems, and be prepared to lead a more socially just world.

Through this site, families, students, caregivers and the community can access the Portland Public Schools (PPS) curriculum. Aligned to adopted Oregon State Standards and developed by teams of teachers and staff within the district, the Portland Public Schools curriculum provides a map of what skills and content students are working on at each grade level.

To browse curriculum:

  1. Click on the “Browse” tab at the top of this page.

  2. Use the drop-down menus in the Filter box to select the school, grade and or subject you want to view. Note: Currently only District Reviewed courses are available to view.

  3. After you have selected a filter or filters, click on the “Browse” button at the bottom right of the Filter box.

  4. To see a unit calendar, click on the link under the column labeled “Course”.

  5. To see an individual unit, click on the unit names listed to the left of the calendar view.

Developing a district curriculum is an ongoing process. Information available on this site will continue to grow as we develop and refine our courses and units across grade levels and all content areas.

Currently, curriculum for English Language Arts and Math is viewable, with Social Studies, Health, Science and Physical Education coming soon.

Family Resources

Dear Abernethy Families,

The Abernethy counseling team worked with many families during spring distance learning, connecting them with support and resources.  We will continue that work this year and ask that if your family is in need of support, that you complete this survey. If there is something you need that is not on this form, please email me at jmorgan1@pps.net.
Here are the links to other resources in our district/city:
  • Earl Blumenaur has an extensive list of resources. You can view the resources on a spreadsheet here.
  • Students can receive 5 days' worth of meals, the pick up days are Mondays and Wednesdays from 3pm-5pm. You can view the list of sites here.
  • PPS free and reduced lunch application.
  • PPS coronavirus resource page.
  • To apply for the Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer Program, which is meant to offset the cost of meals that would have been consumed at school, click here.
If you want to provide assistance:
  • You can donate to the PPS fund, click here. This will help students all across the district to access food and essential items.

Free Vision Zero Yard Signs

During the COVID-19 pandemic, PBOT has received feedback from community members that there has been a noticeable uptick in speeding and dangerous driving behaviors. You may have spotted one of PBOT's new Vision Zero yard signs around Portland in the past few weeks.

We are distributing the signs to encourage safe driving behavior at a time when more people are out walking and rolling for exercise, errands, and self-care.

There are several messages to choose from, and a PBOT volunteer will get the sign to your home through contact-free delivery. Signs are available in English and Spanish. There are a limited number of signs remaining, order yours today!

Reserve your sign here!
