Member Update | Naffziger Surgical Society Day and Loupes Ceremony 2020

September 19, 2020

Dear Naffziger Members,

I hope this newsletter finds you safe and staying both physically healthy and mentally well.  2020 has been an unprecedented year in our lifetime and perhaps the most challenging in which we as a global community have faced as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The impact certainly has touched every aspect of human life, including the UCSF Naffziger Surgical Society.

As this year’s President, I have the privilege of inviting you to attend our annual Naffziger Surgical Society Day, which will take place in less than one week, on Wednesday September 23rd.  The UCSF Naffziger Surgical Society is pleased to be hosting the Loupes Ceremony as part of this event for the second year in a row.  Due to the coronavirus pandemic, this year’s event will take place virtually over Zoom.

I would also like to extend a warm welcome to our new members, and to acknowledge, with sadness, the passing of several of our dear and trusted colleagues.

Naffziger Society Day and Loupes Ceremony

It is with great pleasure that I invite you to attend our annual (and first ever virtual) Naffziger Surgical Society Day, this year via Zoom, to be held in conjunction with Department of Surgery Grand Rounds.  As we navigate these unprecedented times, I am particularly grateful that the overall world circumstances still allowed for our having this important event and hope you will be able to attend.

Wednesday, September 23, 2020 7:00 – 9:30 AM. PDT

Loupes Ceremony

Each year the rising PGY-2's receive their loupes at a special ceremony attended by the entire Department of Surgery. In the department tradition, which has been in place for 15 years, each resident is gifted loupes in honor of a prior UCSF graduate or current UCSF faculty member.  This is the second year which the Naffziger Society has sponsored this important annual event.

Some Final Thoughts

The UCSF Naffziger Surgical Society exists to support the Department of Surgery Residency Training Program and connect the entire family of UCSF Surgical trainees, past, present and future.  Naffziger Day affords an unique opportunity to reconnect with current surgery faculty, old mentors and colleagues while making new friends as we all celebrate together our common connection to the storied legacy of UCSF surgery. Being involved with Naffziger while supporting its events and the UCSF Residency Program has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my career.   It has been a tremendous honor and privilege to serve as President for the 2019-2020 term. I sincerely hope you can join us for this year's virtual Naffziger Surgical Society Day and Loupes Ceremony over Zoom.

With heartfelt appreciation,

Ed
