New Staff Spotlight

Mr. Saurbaugh
Hello! My name is Mr. Saurbaugh and I am entering my 1st year here at KEC. I grew up in Elgin, Illinois and attended Illinois State University where I received my bachelor's in anthropology. I went back to school to obtain my teaching license from Northern Illinois University, where I am also currently working on my masters in adapted physical education. I have been in education as a substitute teacher or a teacher's assistant for the past 6 years. I coach football and track at DeKalb High School. I am excited to be here at KEC and look forward to a great year!
KEC Project of the Month
Our KEC September Project of the Month is the
Restart Wellness Group, led by Ms. Duffy!
The Restart Wellness Group is a voluntary group for staff members that focuses on health and well being through mindfulness practices.  In order to pass along SEL (social emotional learning) strategies on to the students, we need to start with SEL*F. This group provides a dedicated time to explore different elements of mindfulness, mindful movement, breathing, and SEL practices. The intention for the group is to enhance our individual well-being practices while creating a community to learn and grow. The group meets once per week for 50 minutes, which provides the time to learn and practice different strategies, reflect, and share our experience in a group setting.

In addition, we started a voluntary "morning huddle" where staff can come for a quick mindfulness practice to settle in before the students arrive.

We currently have three student groups running in the Restart Program.  The Teamwork and Communication Club (TCC) focuses on collaboration and game-play.  The Wednesday Wellness Group and the Wellness Warriors groups focus on mindfulness activities and will be doing hands-on projects throughout the semester.  These are small groups of students that come together every week to learn and grow as a community.

The Restart program is excited to provide these mentoring t-shirts as a sign of unity during the 2020-2021 school year. Each year our students are assigned staff mentors that help build positive staff-student relationships as well as strengthen the peer relationships within the KEC community.
