Open Access Youth Work
Join us for a discussion on Wednesday 14 October  2 - 4pm, about Open Access Youth Work and the report A Narrative  Review of Impact. Our recent research report looking at the available evidence on the impact of open access youth work has added to the strong narrative emerging from other research (particularly in Scotland). This narrative highlights the role of open access youth work in young people’s lives, including their learning and development, health and wellbeing, safety, and relationships. It also draws out the ‘features’ of open access youth work that contribute to impact. But how should we use this narrative? How can it support and improve the quality of practice? How can it influence future investment into open access youth work? What does it mean for how we evaluate open access youth work in the future?

Coronavirus: Young people and home workers scapegoated, says TUC boss
The government must stop "scapegoating" young people and home workers for its own failings in handling coronavirus, the leader of the TUC has said. From next week there will be a ban on gatherings of more than six people, Meanwhile, coronavirus cases in young people are rising, with Health Secretary Matt Hancock telling them  to follow social distancing rules more carefully, saying: "Don't kill your gran by catching coronavirus and then passing it on." But Ms Frances O'Grady accused ministers of giving "confused and sometimes contradictory" advice since the beginning of lockdown. "What people resent is politicians and government scapegoating parts of the population when some would say they haven't been top-class in terms of their own competence and capability."

Children’s Commissioner for England – Unregulated report
This report  by Anne Longfield, Children’s Commissioner for England, reveals how thousands of children in care are living in unregulated independent or semi-independent accommodation, ranging from a flat to a hostel or bedsit, and in the worst cases caravans, tents and in one case even a barge. These looked after children are entitled to ‘support’ but not ‘care’, and as a result are too often being left to fend for themselves, with minimal support, for all but a few hours a week.

As well as calling for the use of semi-independent and independent provision to be made illegal for all children in care, the report makes a number of recommendations, including:
  • Increasing capacity across the care system. It is critical that the forthcoming Government Care Review promised in the Conservative manifesto addresses the challenge of sufficiency of appropriate care across the care system as a whole – especially capacity in the residential care sector.
  • Clarification of what care looks like for children of different ages, including older teens.
  • Strengthening the role of Independent Reviewing Officers (IROs).

Edge survey finds three quarters of 14-19 year olds want their education to be relevant, giving them the tools and skills they will need in their career
New research commissioned by the Edge Foundation over the summer found that 62% of 14 – 19-year-olds think that coronavirus has changed teaching and learning in schools forever. Many feel that their school or college needs to incorporate some of the ‘lessons from lockdown’ into the long term, with 84% of 14 – 19-year-olds having the opinion that schooling needs to be more flexible and adapt more quickly as a result of the pandemic and 64% thinking that the future of schooling should include both classroom and online learning. As the impacts of lockdown are felt in the wider economy, 70% of 14 – 19-year-olds think the education system needs to catch up with the real world and 76% want their education to be relevant, focused on giving them the tools and skills they will need in their career.

Edge Foundation - A journey to employment for young people with additional needs
The latest report published by the Edge Foundation studies three case studies and how each supports young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) on their journey into employment.  The aim of this report is to breakdown some of these barriers and help young people with disabilities transition into the world of work, to ensure their backgrounds do not further disadvantage their life chances.
The findings show that:
  • In 2019 approximately half of disabled people were in employment (52%) compared with just over four out of five non-disabled people (82%) (ONS, 2019). Additionally, people with disabilities who are in employment are more likely to be in part-time positions and in elementary roles compared to their peers without a disability.
  • Prior to the pandemic, the Youth Census Survey (Youth Employment UK, 2020) highlighted that young people with additional needs faced additional barriers in receiving information, advice and guidance in terms of career support. With 23% of those with additional needs being ‘not very confident’ or ‘not very confident at all’ in being able to move into meaningful employment.
  • However, there are also considerable benefits for workplaces to employ people with disabilities, and these are often not recognised. Benefits include increased diversity of the workforce which brings in, for example, more creativity and attention to detail, as well as a diverse set of unique yet equally valid skills and perspectives.
National Audit Office - Childhood obesity
The NAO has published a report Examining the effectiveness of the government’s approach to reducing childhood obesity in England by considering the evidence base and progress so far. In 2018/19, nearly one tenth of 4 to 5 year olds and more than one fifth of 10 to 11 year olds were classified obese. The NAO estimates that roughly 1.4 million children aged from 2 to 15 years old were classified obese in 2018.

National Children's Bureau – #GiveUsaCHANCEllor
