Focus on the Future

On Monday, Sept. 21 during the Virtual Regular meeting, City Council will vote on the Proposed FY 2021 Budget and 2020 Tax Rate. Some key highlights in the proposed budget include:

  • Lowering of the property tax rate, which is the first adopted effective tax rate since 2013
  •  Hazard pay for first responders
  •  Funds to complete the citywide sidewalk program
  •  Loans for small businesses affected by COVID-19

Residents may sign up to share their feedback during this virtual meeting. For more details and to review the proposed budget and the tax rate notice, visit the City website page about Financial Transparency.

“We believe this proposed budget is a win for the residents and the City,” said City Manager Odis Jones.” Our community will have a better sense of financial stability with this lower property tax rate, and this will help us shape our future.”

Along with the General Election on Tuesday, Nov. 3 comes the Special Election, which focuses around civil service for police officers and firefighters. Some key facts about civil service include:

  • According to state law, the purpose of the civil service law is to “secure efficient fire and police departments composed of capable personnel who are free from political influence and who have permanent employment tenure as public servants.”
  • Adopting civil service will place police and fire personnel under a different set of employee rules than other Missouri City employees.
  • Civil service will affect the City’s budget should the voters approve it.
