Something rumbling in a dream
that wakes before the light.

Is something wrong, my love?
I don’t know.

We go to watch the whales together.

feels like science fiction.

Why do the beautiful things
seem so far away?

My heart wants to be a polar bear,
My soul will be a seal,

And those narwhals whisper
that magic is real.

In the ocean,
I want to be the ocean.

I am the ocean.

You are the ocean.
We are the ocean.

We are the giant, undulating depths
That rage and fall
And fold over back on ourself.

We are the massive deep
That reminds us of ourselves
When we sleep.

We are the source of life,
Asking for nothing
But forgiveness and progress.

We are the forgiveness
That does not come
Until everything else
Is done.

On the dark stairs,
her fingers hold my hand.

It is quiet enough
not to think,

So I don’t.

Before the dawn.
