A New Year, A New Beginning

As we look ahead to a new year, we are surrounded by turmoil both old and new. People are suffering. From a pandemic, from racial injustice and personal struggles. But there is also a feeling of change in the air. People are coming out in numbers never seen before, to learn, listen, and begin to show up to do the work of racial justice. To take care of each other by donating, giving and showing their love.

We hope these actions move to changes in policy, changes in mindset and a fresh new prospective for all. At this time of year on the Jewish calendar, it is a moment for reflection, to take stock of all that has been. We do a 'Cheshbon HaNefesh', a review of how we have been, and make note of all the work to be done personally and in collaboration. And we pause to breathe to be sure we do indeed have the energy to make change.

Now is the time to join us in this reflection not just individually, but as a community around racial justice. Our partners at Edot Midwest Regional Jewish Diversity Collaborative have been setting the stage for this community reckoning. We invite you read the article and view the video by Shahannah McKinney Baldon, Edot's Director, and heed her words,

"... the truth is that none of us needs a TED Talk-style opportunity to leverage our Jewish heritage in service of our work to make the world a better place. Our histories are replete with those who have sought out opportunities to speak Torah to power in everyday life, and who then backed up their words with actions. This year, I challenge all of us to do the same."

May we all keep backing up our words with actions.

Shabbat Shalom,
Sami Stein Avner, Executive Director

There are only three weeks left
in Veggie Chop Shop for the season!
We estimate that over the last 9 weeks we have sent over over 4,500 meals to feed the most vulnerable in our city. This could not have been done without our amazing volunteers, showing up, masked up and ready to chop! Help us finish out the last three weeks with a bang and volunteer today!

Volunteer with Chop Shop Today!
Bags, gloves and hand sanitizer will be provided. The event is socially distanced, and volunteers should wear masks. Hope to see you all there!
