Michigan Budget Decisions Looming

With so much focus on what is happening in Congress, it is easy to overlook our state budget that will need to be finalized by the end of this month.  We have been meeting with legislators and sent a letter to the Governor underlining budget priorities that support children, youth and families at their most vulnerable.  Rather than focus on some of our priority areas that have received significant investment over the last few months, including child care and K-12 system support, this letter is focused on essential items in other critical areas.

Read our letter and other budget communications here. Our letters and other resources that outline our primary talking points for advocates looking to engage the Governor's office, or other elected officials are available throughout our website and contact us if we can help you reach out with your own messages.

Congress is Back in DC;
Let's Demand Action

This week on Capitol Hill, federal representatives including our own Michigan delegation will resume working towards another stimulus and economic relief bill for those most affected by the pandemic. In the three weeks that they will be in session before they again go on break, as voters and constituents you need to ask your representative and senators to take urgent action that truly serves the interests of our most vulnerable children, youth and families.

Find out how to contact your representatives in Washington, D.C. and look for what we've been talking with them about here and here

Celebrate Kinship Care Month with Action

In late July, Michigan’s Children and other members of the Michigan Kinship Care Coalition helped move two bills that would help to better support kinship families, another step toward implementation. After already passing through the Michigan House, House Bills 5443 and 5444 passed out of the Senate Committee on Families, Seniors and Veterans and now wait for only action by the full Senate before being sent to the Governor for signature. But the clock is ticking.

Because we are already so close to finishing this process this year, with broad bi-partisan support of the bills, let’s just tell our Senators to get it finished. Read our joint testimony here.  For more information, contact Michele Corey or Deb Frisbee, Michigan Kinship Care Coalition Policy Co-Chairs.
