Dear Florida CEC members,

I hope this message finds you and your families well. As president, my vision for this year is principled on an intentional focus and commitment to social justice, equity, and inclusion.
The current unprecedented challenges due to the coronavirus pandemic have upended our lives in multiple ways. As a result, the conditions of teaching have changed dramatically--in virtual, hybrid, and in person modes, and your efforts to maintain high quality instruction and learning has been difficult. None of this has gone unnoticed by our association. CEC has provided resources to help with remote learning.
Compounding these challenges are the events that have unfolded because of long-standing racist structures in our institutions and systems. The unjust deaths of Black individuals have an indelible impact on families and communities. This juncture is the impetus to take on a call for action, action against racism and its damaging effects. As educators, community members, parents, administrators and supervisors, we are uniquely placed in the educational system to do just that, take action.
We take a collective stance toward ensuring that we do our part in creating just systems that combat racism and disrupt inequality. We have a responsibility as stewards in the educational system to create and sustain meaningful change. This can only happen through strategic goals and concrete actions. Please review FCEC’s mission, goals, and strategic actions for this year.
We welcome four new board members: CAN Representative—Angela Weary-Crooks; Conference Program Chair—Dr. Marissa Kase; Secretary---Dr. Ashley Pennypacker-Hill; and University Student Representative---Lindsey Pike.
We are a group of individuals with different backgrounds, experiences, and professions who are dedicated to our exceptional student education community and committed to diversity, caring and respect for the dignity and worth of all individuals, a core CEC value.
I do hope that you will join us in FCEC’s commitment to social justice, equity, and inclusion by participating in events we are planning this year.

Kind regards,

Karen Ramlackhan, Ph.D.
