COVID-19 Updates

AstraZeneca Phase 3 COVID-19 Vaccine Trial Still On Hold in U.S.

Last week, AstraZeneca voluntarily paused the phase 3 clinical trial of its coronavirus vaccine due to a potentially unexplained illness in a single research participant in the UK, where the vaccine is also being studied. On Saturday, the company announced that the trials resumed in the U.K. after regulators deemed them safe to proceed. Trials in the U.S. and other countries remain paused while AstraZeneca works with national health authorities, including the FDA.

The 16 individuals in the Rochester area who have enrolled in the study since last week were contacted directly and informed of the incident. Medical Center researchers will continue to monitor the health of all individuals participating in the study on a daily basis. To date, none of the local volunteers has experienced any unexpected or severe reactions.

N3C COVID-19 Data Analytics Platform Now Open for Use

The National COVID Cohort Collaborative (N3C) Data Enclave is now open to University of Rochester and all other scientists looking for evidence-based answers to COVID-19 research questions. The N3C systematically collects data derived from the electronic health records of people who were tested for COVID-19 or who have had related symptoms. This centralized and secure national data analytics platform is for COVID-19 research, including studying potential risk factors, protective factors and long-term health consequences as the pandemic continues to evolve.

Team to Study Transmission of COVID-19, Antibodies via Breast Milk

A collaborative research group led by Kirsi Jarvinen-Seppo, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of Pediatric Allergy/Immunology at URMC, will examine whether mothers can transmit COVID-19 through breast milk and whether the breast milk itself has immunological properties against the disease. The project, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the NIH, involves researchers at the URMC, New York University and the University of Idaho. Learn more.

Public Health Grand Rounds Registration Closed

The upcoming Public Health Grand Rounds featuring Monroe County Commissioner of Public Health Michael Mendoza, M.D., M.P.H., is currently at capacity and registration is now closed. The presentation titled, "It Shouldn’t Have to Take a Pandemic to Rediscover Public Health," will be available at a later date on the Center for Community Health & Prevention website.

Creators of Dr. Chat Bot Featured by New Ain Center Series

Startup Bytes, a new Ain Center digital brown bag lunch series about and for entrepreneurs, will feature speakers from UR Health Lab, the great minds behind Dr. Chat Bot and RocCovid. The two platforms enable communities to operate safely and to track COVID-19 spread during the current public health crisis. Register now.
Date: Friday, September 18
Time: 12:00 – 1:00 pm

Register for Clinical Research in the COVID-era and Beyond Un-Meeting

Register now for this “rapid-response” virtual un-meeting hosted by the UR CTSI's Center for Leading Innovation and Collaboration. The un-meeting will encourage discussions about the changes in clinical and translational research resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic and how they might be sustained to improve the field into the future. Learn more and register.
Date: Wednesday, September 30
Time: 11:00 am – 3:00 pm

Language for Biosketches and Funding Citations

Anyone who receives support from a UR CTSI grant must describe that support when reporting for other funding - on both new and existing grants. To help with that reporting, the UR CTSI has developed guidance and language that can be used in biosketches and "other support" sections of grant applications. The UR CTSI also provides language to help individuals cite appropriate UR CTSI grants in any publications or other academic work that benefits from UR CTSI support.

Registration Deadline for Career Engagement, Revitalization and Transition Program

This one-year program is designed to provide professional development for URMC faculty at the associate professor or professor levels. It is designed to facilitate transitions based on practical knowledge from local experts and peers. There is no charge to faculty to attend. This program is made possible through educational funds from the UR CTSI and the Dean’s office. Apply by Tuesday, September 15.
