Can Men Attend the LawyerMomOwnerSummit? Absolutely!
In checking the demographics of my email lists, I learned that my readership is split roughly 50-50 between men and women. Often when women write about business topics like starting a law firm, they attract largely female audiences, so I was gratified to find that my work spans gender.
That said, you’ve probably noticed both at MyShingle.com and in these emails that I’ve been focused on promotion of the Lawyer+Mom+Owner Summit: Parenthood, Practice & Profit in the Pandemic -- a virtual event that trends female. And indeed, the original impetus for the summit: was the recognition that women have disproportionately borne the brunt of the pandemic, and have been stretched to the limit of caring for children while still practicing law.
But the Summit isn’t just a b*tch fest to gripe about the unfairness of it all for moms. Instead, it’s about solutions: we’ll have panels on the ethical and legal considerations of working from home, and on marketing when you can’t meet a contact face to face for a cup of coffee. These panels offer information equally applicable to men and women running a practice.
In addition to causing stress about child-care, the pandemic has spawned other questions such as the best way to manage personal finances (repaying student loan debt, retirement, etc…) or whether the work you currently are doing matters. We’ll have a Q&A panel on finance and investment questions along with a panel on transitions, showing how lawyers have segued from owning a firm to starting a non-profit, working in academia, legal tech or turning a side-hustle into a full time job. Again, topics suitable for male and female attorneys.
Finally, the pandemic hasn’t caused but has certainly exacerbated racial and political strife within the country. What is it like to practice law and represent clients whose political views don’t necessarily mesh with your own? Expect provocative discussion on that issue from our Breaking Barriers panel.
It’s true that our speakers are 100 percent female (though we have companies owned by men who are sponsoring and will have a chance to interact). That’s important because at many legal conferences, women don’t have an opportunity to speak though that is changing. But that doesn’t mean that our content isn’t relevant to men or that men aren’t welcome. We’re eager to have you!
Here’s a Harvard Business Journal article as well as this article from Working Mother on the benefits of women mentoring men.
