Case studies are an important way for students of all ages to explore real-world issues that directly impact our local and regional communities.

A case study is a research method involving an up-close, in-depth, and detailed examination of a particular situation, place, moment in time, or organization. These supplemental activities can be used to better understand important issues that directly impact students' lives such as wildfires, air quality, pollution issues, etc. In the past six months, the Environmental Literacy and Sustainability Initiative (ELSI) team finalized a number of case studies on a variety of topics that can be customized and adapted for use with students. Participation Strategies for Live Video Instruction
Three easy-to-use anytime strategies to encourage student engagement.

- Kick things off with a poll. Use Mentimeter to start your lesson with a conversation starter and post the results.
- Spark discussion in chat. Let students respond to classmates or share resources in chat.
- Prompt discussion with a word cloud. Ask a question with a one word response and watch the cloud grow as students provide their answers.

In an effort to make sure that all of our students in San Mateo county have public library cards for SORA (i.e., e-books and audiobooks), as well as access to other valuable virtual resources such as homework help, research skills, author talks, and story times, all educators can apply for a Library Links card through LMS for additional online resources/databases.
