Last week the Federal Government, through the Center for Disease Control (CDC) initiated a National Eviction Moratorium. Eliminating evictions during a pandemic is a really good thing! However, we implore those in need to make sure it does not become a trap. What is less known though is that on December 31, 2020, when the moratorium ends, anyone who is behind on their rent will be obligated to pay it plus any penalties. Evictions can begin again at that time. Our concern is that families who are unable to pay their rent during these months will simply get into a hole that they cannot escape. What can a person do if they are struggling? Here are three suggestions:
Apply for rent relief or utility assistance through Family Promise of Waukesha County
Be upfront with your landlord and discuss your situation. Try to get ahead of any issue.
Investigate jobs that are available for extra funds- even if you do not want that job. We know of many businesses that cannot fill all their positions. Desperate times call for desperate measures.
Finally, Family Promise is here to help. Call us. Perhaps we can help you or a loved one talk through a solution.
Join us this Tuesday for a virtual Town Hall Meeting. Visit with Joe Nettesheim and make sure you are in the loop about all things Family Promise of Waukesha County. And prepare your questions. Joe will do his best to answer whatever is on your mind. (Well, if it’s about Family Promise!) RSVP or submit questions to info@familypromisewaukesha.org
This will be a zoom meeting broadcast on Facebook.
No one wants to talk about snow. We do not blame you. However, with a new building we need to be prepared. Do you know someone in the Waukesha area who might be willing to offer an in-kind donation of snow plowing? If so have them contact Joe Nettesheim.
The Family Promise national conference is going virtual! Friends, supporters, volunteers, board members, staff and anyone interested in families experiencing homelessness can participate from the comfort of your own home. The conference will be September 30 and October 1 from 1-6pm both days. Featured speakers are Family Promise CEO Claas Ehlers and author, activist, and speaker Shane Claiborne.
