Not quite sure how to start? Before you apply, we recommend considering what kind of teacher you want to become so you can be sure you are pursuing the credential that is best for you.

What kind of teacher do you want to become?

I want to be a Special Education Teacher!
Education Specialist Credential (ESC)

The Education Specialist Credential (ESC) program provides future special educators the knowledge and experience to teach a wide range of diverse students with mild to moderate support needs or extensive support needs. The California Education Specialist Credential authorizes program graduates to teach students with learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities, developmental disabilities, autism, cerebral palsy, emotional and behavioral disorders, and other areas of need.

Special Education is a high-need field in the chronic teacher shortage we face as a state. At UCSB, we will prepare you to advocate for the historically under-served communities within a classroom, all the while strengthening your position as a marketable and highly-sought-after professional in the field.

I want to be an Elementary School Teacher!
Multiple Subject Teaching Credential (MST)

The Multiple Subject Teaching Credential (MST) program leverages the power of a close-knit, cohesive community. Our candidates receive individualized attention from MST supervisors and local K-12 teachers who oversee and help guide their growth. TEP is a relationship-centric program not only in terms of people caring about people, but also in the interlacing of learning through theory in UCSB classrooms with learning through practice in local K-12 classrooms.

Our elementary program provides you with the unique opportunity to explore how to integrate art experiences into the classroom curriculum. Our elementary teacher candidates also engage students with hands-on activities in the fields of robotics, circuits, crafts, and buildings.

I want to be a Junior High or High School Teacher!
Single Subject Teaching Credential (SST)

The Single Subject Teaching Credential (SST) program offers the ability for you to become a teacher in the following subjects: English, History and Social Science, Math, or Science (Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Physics, Physics + Industrial Technology). You will strengthen your practice as part of a close cohort while you gain extensive experiences student teaching within local 7-12 grade classrooms. Many of our teacher candidates also have the opportunity to attend professional and content area conferences during their credential year.

Our secondary program will provide you with a robust student-teaching experience thanks to its deep, developed connection to the local educational community. You will be surrounded by a dedicated network of local teachers and schools where you will grow as a teacher and a leader.
