4 reasons to keep dreaming

The weeks go quick,
evaporating like puddles when what we need is a drink.

Still the days go long,
stretching out without form as if we are floating endlessly
and standing still

at the same time.

In times like these, I believe we must inspire each other.
This is not a special, but a necessary thing.
A gift we need to give,
passing what works along from one heart to another.
A torch down the line
as we move through a cave
that came as a surprise
to all of us.

You are strong.

You are powerful.

You are capable.

This week I offer fuel.

1. Maya Angelou reciting “Still I Rise”

No matter how many times you’ve heard this poem, its power endures.

“Everyone in the world has gone to bed one night with fear, or pain, or loss, or disappointment. And yet each of us has awaken arisen…” she begins, before giving an otherworldly delivery of a poem that makes you feel a foot taller.

If anyone has ever told you that you have unrealistic expectations, watch this talk. The actress who played the lead in Ugly Betty (and inspired Malala Yousafzai) speaks a truth we all need to hear.

3. Jim Carrey: I Needed Color

This six minute documentary on why Jim Carrey paints reminds us why we must do what our heart calls us to do.

“What you do in life chooses you… When I really started painting a lot, I had become so obsessed that there was nowhere to move in my home, paintings were everywhere. They had become part of the furniture. I was eating on them… I needed color.”

4. Moving Art, by Louie Schwartzberg

Enchanting and wordless, our family has been watching these in the morning. They allow us to travel in our minds, and find that necessary sense of wonder. There are three seasons on Netflix, of everything from underwater to outer space. Throw it on your laptop or TV tomorrow morning while you make coffee or however you start your day.

May you dream this week, knowing that our lives depend on each other.
