It's no secret the journalism industry is struggling — even more so during the pandemic. News outlets of all sizes, especially local ones, are facing layoffs and shutdowns. It’s clearer than ever that we need to build sustainable news organizations that work with their communities, rather than extract from them. 

Southerly covers the environment and communities of this region with nuance and context; every day we're countering stereotypical national narratives. We partner with local, regional, and national publications on stories and projects. We have shifted from in-person events to virtual workshops and gatherings to build trust, create relationships, and learn from the people whose lives we are writing about.
