An Update from your Covid Committee

As some of you may know the main committee appointed a Covid sub-committee early on in the lockdown, and they have been kept busy formulating strategies; guidance notes and keeping abreast with the every-changing government and RYA rules and regulations to keep the club as open as we can whilst adhering to all the above.

The committee has met regularly and had drawn up our guidance and strategies for opening the clubroom and changing rooms in due cours.

However in light of the recent goverment announcement and the uptick in Covid transmission, we have decided to put on hold any further opening up of the facilities for now. We will continue to reviews HMG and RYA guidelines, and as soon as we feel that it is appropriate we will update members via the newsletters.

For the time being the changing rooms, clubroom and bar remain closed, and we continue to ask members to sit outside, use the sanitising stations, follow the rule of 6, and arrive changed and ready to sail, then change at home afterwards.

Lockers

We have now put the lockers in the front hall back in use. Please clean the keys with the adjacent spray before and after use.

New Members Morning - Saturday 19th September

New members will have received an invitation from the Commodore to come for coffee, pastries and a general into to the club next Saturday. Your covid committee have worked out a way that we can run this within the guidelines, but ith the new rule of six we will be running this differently this year, with separate groups of five outside, and committee members introducing themselves to each group in turn, so it is essential if you intend to attend, that you let Fraser know as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. Thank you

Duties - and Safety Boat news

Thanks to everyone who has signed up for duties. Safety Boats are now being rostered as Safety Boat Officer (qualified driver) and Safety Boat Crew which can be any member. There are masks in the boats, and available in the clubhouse, for those who would feel more comfortable in a safety boat wearing one - or of course bring your own - and for use when carrying out rescues. Strict limit of two people in the safety boats to ensure social distancing, unless carrying out a rescue.

If you have not yet been rostered for a duty, there are still some vacancies available to sign up for before the end of the year. If you have been rostered but cannot do your date, you need to arrange a swap. Often contacting those rostered near to your date and asking for a swap is a good way to find someone.

Papercourt goes Round the Island - In Lasers!

Andrew and Liz Hill Smith, Martyn Walker Peter Walter and Paul Walker with a support boat in attendance, decided that Papercourt was not quite big enough so expanded their horizons, and decided to sail around the South Island - aka the Isle of Wight, on Friday, in a variety of dinghies. It looks like they had a blast, and if you click the button below you can see Andrew's edited on-board highlights. What next Andrew? Around the North Island in one go?

The West Pontoon and our thanks to Sailability

Many members have now benefitted from the redecking of the West Pontoon with the Dura Deck grid structure, which is having some success in deterring the geese. We need to extend our thanks to The Friends of Papercourt Sailability for their contribution of £3,000 towards the cost, out of a total of £5,250. We look forward to a time when we can welcome our Sailability team and their clients back to the lake - hopefully next year.

Sailing Programme

As the nights draw in our evening offerings have ceased - see report below about last Wednesday night cruising - but still plenty of opportunities at the weekend;-

Every Saturday afternoon and Sundays from 10.00 am to about 3.30 pm Cruising is available all over the lake, but if the Sunday morning racing is busy, you may prefer to keep clear of the race.

Saturday Afternoon has the Class led, Sprint Racing (all welcome) lots of short races in a simple format so easy for all.

Sunday Mornings, starting at 11a.m. we have the three General Handicap races working towards the Summer Series Cup with over 50 helms having taken part so far. The races are about 25 minutes long each so not daunting or too challenging,

We have the Novice Race(s) after the GH races, around 1 p.m., on Sundays, which is a great way to get into racing and a Novice Cup, The Dakin Novice Trophy, for the winner

Ladies Sailing and Wednesday evening Cruising

Last Monday saw the final Ladies that Launch outing for the season. It was great to see around 18 boats out and we hope that you will all take advantage of the cruising times mentioned above, or even come and join in the racing, either on Saturdays, Sunday mornings, or the Novice Race on Sunday lunchtime. Don't pack your boats away for the winter just because the evenings are drawing in.

CRUISING
Congratulations – to all those intrepid cruising sailors who turned out for the last Wednesday evening social sail of the year! – (where has the time gone? – Covid has a lot to answer for!) As far as I could make out, there were twenty boats on the water, including Oppies, Toppers, Lasers, Solos, Graduates, Hartleys and a Wayfarer!
The wind stood fair to take us all to the end of the lake – and then (surprise, surprise!) it faded away and made it challenging for many of us to get back under our own steam (so to speak) - but I counted them out and I counted them back, and no boats were lost in the holding of this finale event, which, to complete the evening, concluded with drinks and nibbles all round – a great way for cruisers to end their Wednesday evening sailing for the year!

As above don't pack your boats away, but come and cruise at the weekends.

Masks for Charity

So with plans for social events still on hold, and the requirement for face coverings, I am still making masks for charity in all sizes from child, teen, small adult and adult sizes, so that we can still contribute to our favourite charities - RNLI, Sailability and Guide Dogs. Please drop me an email if you want more information. They look like the picture but lots of different fabrics available. £3 each
