tonight's pick-me-ups

Things we're doing to unwind and get cozy before bed tonight:

📅 Un-scheduling our meetings. Meetings aren't fun, but if you (probably) can't skip them altogether then try making a demo video or asking for real-time feedback after each meeting to make better use of your and everyone else's time.

🎧 Reading with our ears.
Audiobooks are a fantastic way to keep your mind busy and your hands free, especially for multitasking that doesn't feel like multitasking. We have some good finds like Mexican Gothic and The Vanishing Half queued up on ours.

💄 Staying on top of it. Never underestimate what a red lip can do for your mood.
Here's what's launching in beauty this month, including Nars Climax Extreme Mascara and Urban Decay Stoned Vibes Eye Shadow Palette to play up your eyes.

🧠 Giving our brains a workout. Stay sharp with
courses that help you understand how your mind works while unblocking some of that brain fog and unlocking more of your creativity.

P.S.
Let's talk about the social awkwardness that's still Zoom 💻

 HEALTH
For when caffeine isn't giving you the kick you crave ~ This one's for the many of us who actually feel tired and less wired after sipping on a cup of coffee: "Drinking lots of coffee on the regular? Chances are, you’ve developed a mild tolerance to the effects of caffeine, [Michelle Worley, a registered nurse and Director of Clinical Operations at Aeroflow Healthcare] explains. So that lightening jolt of energy you used to get after your first espresso doesn’t hit the same now that you take two shots a day. 'Weaning yourself off of caffeine and then reintroducing it later may help,' says Worley. The most important thing to note is that caffeine — despite how easily we can get our hands on it — has a powerful effect on our body. It can stimulate us to feel awake. And if we drink too much of it — and are especially sensitive, tolerant or withdrawing from it — coffee can have adverse effects, making us feel depleted. So be mindful of your intake. Keep track of your what kind of caffeine you’re drinking and go from there. Are you drinking three big cans of Monster energy drinks at midnight? Are you saturating your morning cup of tea with sugar? There are lots of variations. Study your habits, take notes and work from there."

INTERESTING  For when the bark really is as big as the bite ~ While it might be a fun topic to joke about, the USPS has a system for warning letter carriers about aggressive dogs who are known to bite: "The dog attacking the mail carrier issue is no joke. According to the USPS, 5,803 postal workers were attacked by dogs last year, down 400 from 2017. Every June, the USPS has Dog Bite Awareness Week, although I must admit I wasn't aware of it until I started reporting on the post office. 'Training, socializing and taking safety precautions with your dog can help ensure dog bites and attacks do not occur,' the USPS stated last Dog Bite Awareness Week. Basically, if owners did a better job training their dogs and didn't put them in positions where they could charge at mail carriers, this wouldn't be a problem. But, we do not live in a perfect world. You were probably told as a kid not to pet strange dogs. The USPS has a similar policy, in that it instructs mail carriers to 'consider all dogs as potentially hazardous' ... All that being said, many mail carriers have wonderful relationships with families they get to know over the decades they deliver mail to them, and that includes their dogs."

RELATIONSHIPS  For when you need a break, but not a break-up ~ Couples, even the happiest ones, still need to spend some time a part. After all, you need to be committed to your own development in addition to your relationship to continue thriving: "Have no fear if you've been craving a little space; that doesn't mean there's anything wrong with your relationship. In fact, it could be just what the two of you need ... 'Share this with your partner, [ensuring it's] not about spending less time with them but rather spending more time with yourself [and] how you've come to realize why this is important for you at this time.' Being able to talk about these differences, make space for them, and encourage each other on your individual paths, according to [psychotherapist Ken Page], leads to a more vibrant relationship. However you choose to do it, everyone needs time to themselves to reconnect to their being and foster their relationship with their self. When we do, we show up better for the people in our lives, and our relationships are always better for it."

SELF  For when you learn how to cope ~ Resilience isn't a trait, it's a tool that you can hone and develop over time to take on challenges that pop-up in your path, like a global pandemic for example: "As I’ve encountered more and more [setbacks] over my career, I’ve developed a personal toolkit of resilience strategies that I take pride in and have come to rely on. Part of me almost relishes the challenge of hardship — though I also recognize that pursuing entrepreneurship or athletics is a choice, while dealing with a pandemic is not ... That said, developing the skills of resilience — pragmatic response, wholehearted restoration, purposeful rebuilding — will prove useful now and in the future. You might already be quite capable in at least one of them. But there’s probably also room to grow. While we may yearn for a time when the coronavirus is a distant memory, it’s reshaping of our economy and society cannot be undone. We will still encounter setbacks and hardship. Rather than feel daunted that your fixed store of resilience might not be up to the task, remember that you’ve worked through tough challenges before and have valuable experience to draw upon."

🧘‍♀️ Try the Forward Fold pose to stretch out your hips after sitting all day 🧘‍♀️
via Refinery29
  1. Sit up tall with your legs straight out in front of you.
  2. Bend your right knee over your straight left leg.
  3. Walk your right hand down, holding the outside of your left leg.
  4. Prop your left hand next to your left outer leg to help you root your pelvis into the floor and wrap your core around the spine, making sure to avoid collapsing into your hips.
  5. Breathe into this pose for five breaths as you root back into your right hip and release your right low back.
  6. Breathe in to sit up.
  7. Repeat on the second side.
