Fostering Rescue Bunnies
By Heather O.
I'm a new foster with Rabbit Advocates and I wanted to share my experiences and hopefully inspire others to foster. My family was interested in possibly adopting a bunny, but we weren't sure if they would be the right fit as we've never had one before. I thought that it would be an awesome idea to foster, which would let us know if rabbits were a good fit for us and allow us to help an organization out.

Our first bunny, Brownie, came to us this July after she was caught at Luscher Farms. When Brownie was rescued, she had many fleas and scratches and needed urgent veterinary care. Our second and current foster bunny, Pepper, was found in a woman’s yard, where she had been fed only fruits and nuts and hadn’t pooped for three days.

Both of these bunnies were in rough shape and as a newbie I knew that I would need some guidance. The RA team has been a great resource for me, especially Lori, and they are very willing to give advice.

One of the first things that I was taught was to look at the poop! Poop really can tell you a lot about a bunny's health. Make sure that they are eating quality hay, greens, and pellets. The Bunny’s Best Bites hay that the bunnies get has been a HUGE hit with both of my first rabbits.

Another thing I learned to help a bunny blossom is to learn their personality and then cater to that. Brownie was shy and didn't like a lot of attention, so we made sure that she had a few places to hide and we didn't try to interact with her all of the time (it was hard with my kids). After a while she would venture out more and more and by the time she was adopted she had come out of her shell so much more. Brownie, now named Persephone, is thriving in her new home!

Pepper, our second bunny, has been a social butterfly from the start. She likes to explore and likes being around people. Knowing that, we made sure that she could completely free roam our whole house (lots of bunny proofing needed to happen) and that we would give her as much attention as she wanted.

It's been a lot of fun having these bunnies and I've learned a lot about rabbit care. It has been very rewarding to know we can help Rabbit Advocates and bunnies out. While it was sad to see our first bunny go to another home when she got adopted, knowing that she was going to a great home made it that much easier.

Calling all artists!

Rabbit Advocates is preparing for an upcoming initiative and we will need help from people who love art and love bunnies.
