  On Thursday evening, North Mecklenburg is hosting a Virtual Open House at 5:30pm. You can find the schedule here. Take some time to visit each of your child's teachers virtually, attend meetings about the Technical Institute, Career and College Promise, and Student Services. Attention North Meck Freshman

Attention new North Meck Freshmen! Are you looking for a way to get involved and meet other Vikings? Join Connection Club! There will be an interest meeting on Wednesday, September 16th. Email Matt Torres if you would like to attend (matt01torres@icloud.com).

SAT Updates


North Meck will administer the SAT beginning again on Sept 24th and October 3rd. Registration is still open for all test dates. Please be prepared to show a valid ID (not expired) and have your ticket available to show, either printed or on your mobile device. You will be required to answer Covid screening questions and have your temperature checked before entering the building. You will also be required to wear a mask while in the building and while testing. If you are unable to follow these regulations, you will need to withdraw your registration to test. We ask that students arrive at 7:30am so that we can begin the screening process. Report to J hall when you arrive.

National Technical Honor Society
(NTHS)

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
  • Be a current 11th or 12th grader
  • Attain an overall unweighted GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
  • Be enrolled in at least one career/technical education (CTE) class this school year, OR have successfully completed at least 2 CTE courses since 9th grade, with a minimum of a “B.”
  • No discipline records
  • Demonstrate critical workplace values, honesty, technical skills, teamwork, loyalty, initiative, leadership, and commitment to personal and professional excellence.
  • Pay a NEW membership fee of $35 by assigned due date (TBD)

To be inducted into The National Technical Honor Society, students are required to meet strict criteria and membership is by invitation only.

National Honors Society

Invitation letters have been sent via email to all Juniors and Seniors who are eligible to apply to the National Honors Society. Included in the email is an information form as well as time and dates for the information session. The information session will take place on Tuesday September 15th at 345pm via zoom.

The submission deadline for the information form is 3:30 p.m. on Monday September 21st. In the meantime you may contact Ms Oates, Mr. Lyll, or Ms. Pasko with any questions.
 
North Meck Key Club
 
North Meck's Key Club will be having their interest meeting on Monday, September 21st, at 3:00 pm via Zoom. Key Club is a great way for students to find volunteer opportunities and make friends. An interest form is posted on the homepage of the website at http://keyclubnm.weebly.com/. They can find further information about the club there, too. Any questions can be emailed to the teacher advisor (rosst.smith@cms.k12.nc.us) or the president (soniatper@gmail.com). 
  • Will you be 16 years old by April 15, 2021?
  • Are you interested in participating in 10+ hours of Career Readiness Training? 
  • Would you like to apply for a PAID summer job/internship with the Mayor's Youth Employment Program?  
If so, please complete steps 1 and 2 by end of day on September 30, 2020.

Bryan Scholarship @ Davidson:
This scholarship will be awarded to one male and female top scholar athlete. To be considered for this scholarship, students must: 1). Participate in an eligible sport (list of eligible sports found HERE; 2). Be nominated by a counselor or coach; and 3). Provide stats and a player profile to the Davidson coach of your sport. If you are interested in being nominated, please complete the Scholarship Interest Survey here: https://forms.gle/TX1Pdj5yCyAzA2ME9. In addition, please go ahead and begin your Davidson application, as it will be due October 15th. North Meck can nominate up to three student-athletes.
 
Morehead-Cain Scholarship @ UNC Chapel Hill:
To be selected, students must:
·         Have a challenging schedule;
·         Have above average SAT/ACT scores;
·         Demonstrate leadership through courage, action, and initiative;
·         Demonstrate character by exhibiting the highest levels of integrity, honesty, conscientiousness, bravery, humility, generosity, and empathy; and
·         Demonstrate physical vigor by playing a sport/having a commitment to an active lifestyle.

Please note: North Meck is only eligible to nominate 4 seniors; however, if you are not selected, you may apply as an individual. Also, test scores are optional this year. Please follow this link to complete the Scholarship Nomination Application. Your responses must be submitted by 2:30 p.m. on the deadline.

Requesting Transcripts and Recommendation Letters  – Watch this short, informative VIDEO on how to request transcripts and recommendation letters in Naviance! Some other useful tips:
  • You cannot request a recommendation letter from a counselor in Naviance; you must, instead, email them directly.
  • Please provide a brag sheet to your recommenders.
  • If you are applying to a North Carolina college, you are highly encouraged to request your transcript in CFNC. Instructions on how to request transcripts can be found here.

The Park Scholarship @ NCSU is a four-year scholarship awarded on the basis of outstanding accomplishments and potential in scholarship, leadership, service, and character. This scholarship is valued at about $112,000 for North Carolina residents, including: tuition and fees; room and board; books and personal expenses; educational trips retreats and seminars; enrichment grants to fund study abroad, research projects, service activities, and conferences; early course registration, and more.

To be eligible, students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, and apply for fall, first-year admission into a baccalaureate program at NC State. Students are selected based on scholarship, leadership, service, and character. A complete description of each quality is available here: http://park.ncsu.edu/apply/selection-criteria/. Scholarship criteria include: 1).
  • Excellent academic standing and strong standardized test scores;
  • A high level of engagement and leadership in a few meaningful activities in your school or community;
  • A desire to master subjects and to seek learning experiences outside the classroom;
  • Assuming formal leadership roles;
  • Demonstrating service by finding ways to improve the lives of others; and
  • Demonstrating character by setting positive examples for others, having personal fortitude, and having the highest levels of integrity.
 
To apply, students must be endorsed by their school counselor. However, if you feel that you meet the criteria, and you are not nominated, you may self-endorse. If you believe you meet these criteria, and you are interested in being endorsed, please complete the Scholarship Interest and Nomination form: https://forms.gle/22ECD3sYnyD789pZ6. Please note: North Meck is only allowed to endorse two students. If you have any questions, please email Mrs. Cameron. You must submit your application to Mrs. Cameron by 2:30 p.m. on 9/23/2020.
 

HEROES Health Careers      
Connection: A Teen Health  Career Club (9th - 12th grades)

 
The HEROES Health Careers Connection is a teen health career club for 9th - 12th-grade students who are interested in learning more about careers in healthcare. Students will thoroughly enjoy health science workshops, health career speakers, games, and more!
