Reads when you're up late anyway. Here are tonight's round-up for every occasion:

RELATIONSHIPS  For when friendships come first ~ Some friendships are so strong that they even take precedence over romantic partnerships: "What hasn’t shifted much is the expectation that a monogamous romantic relationship is the planet around which all other relationships should orbit. By placing a friendship at the center of their lives, people such as [Kami West and Kate Tillotson] unsettle this norm. Friends of their kind sweep into territory typically reserved for romantic partners ... Many of those who place a friendship at the center of their life find that their most significant relationship is incomprehensible to others. But these friendships can be models for how we as a society might expand our conceptions of intimacy and care. A platonic partnership may not feel right for everyone, and as is true with dating, even those who want a mate might not be able to find a suitable one. But these relationships have spillover benefits for those in close proximity to them."

CULTURE  For when you're guilty of loving a good mystery ~ True crime has never been more popular, and our fascination is further fueled by Netflix's reboot of the beloved classic, Unsolved Mysteries: "Instead of relying on the usual headline-grabbing stories that dominate the crime market, it builds the kind of confounding threads that thousands of Redditors flock to solve themselves. It also sensitively renders stories of people who aren’t white, featuring victims and families not usually part of the crime industrial complex, a timely reminder of who gets left out of the audience’s — and online sleuths’ — sympathies ... The politics and ethics of true crime will always be complicated. Not just because, as is often suggested, it involves the commodification of pain and tragedy, but because it feeds into existing ideas about crime and punishment, about who deserves redemption and innocence and who doesn’t. The new Unsolved Mysteries invites viewers not just to endlessly interpret crimes, but, in a small way, to think about the people left out of the zeal for justice."

LIFESTYLE  For when there's a new Julie and Julia in the kitchen ~ Trent Pheifer is going where no home cook has gone before — making every Ina Garten recipe ever: "Pheifer began his project, Store Bought Is Fine, five years ago. In the years since its inception, he’s learned a bevy of culinary techniques, sharpened his photography skills, amassed a sizable online following, and even met his culinary idol. What began as a whim has become an all-consuming and life-altering project. 'The initial concept was to put pictures of my horrible food next to her gorgeous-looking professional photos, but that kind of fell by the wayside over time,' Pheifer says. It has since morphed into a multidimensional enterprise that’s become an integral part of his life ... Ina will always have a special place in my heart. She taught me how to cook. There’s a lot of recipes that I grew up with that I would like to put my own spin on. The end of this will be bittersweet. It’s been five years of my life. But I’m excited for the next chapter.'"

SELF  For when we have a lot of hugs saved up ~ Skin hunger, or touch deprivation, is not only real but it's also heavily linked to our emotions and mental health: "For a lot of us, our skin is the means through which we intuit the energies of others, in a way FaceTiming or calls could never do. We also want to comfort and be comforted through our skin and when this hasn't happened in months, one of our most used senses begins to starve ... Even hugging a pillow can be helpful and can bring on warmth both from the pressure against your skin, which mimics touch from another person or pet, which your brain still interprets as an embrace. Massages, long showers, dancing, even just walking around your room are few activities that can help overcome touch hunger when you’re alone. Till the time we get to a place where the very things we loved aren’t also the things that boost the spread of the virus — hugs, handshakes, high-fives — hang in there. And maybe adopt an animal."
