tonight's pick-me-ups

Things we're doing to unwind and get cozy before bed tonight:

🇺🇸 Running for office. The latest fitness trend ... JK. But seriously, your vote matters and your voice matters. More womxn are running for office now than ever, so keep this guide handy if you ever consider a campaign.

🥰 Sweet talking to ourselves. Compliments and positivity aren't just for our friends.
Incorporate more positive self-talk into your daily routine by focusing on one area of yourself or speaking without self-judgement.

🍂 Catching every whiff of Fall. Bring apple picking and the sultry spices of pumpkin pie straight into your living room.
These candles, sprays, and diffusers capture all the cozy autumn smells.

🍷 Summoning our inner sommelier. The most important question of the year:
what wine goes best with our takeout order? Hint: it's Riesling for sushi and a refreshing rosé with fried chicken.

P.S.
Middle part for the middle of the week 💇‍♀️

Reads when you're up late anyway. Here are tonight's round-up for every occasion:

 SELF
For when good deeds can lead to good looks ~ Well, kind of. But being selfless could make you more attractive to others: "Researchers have also found that giving may make the givers themselves happier, more confident and even physically healthier. As experts on the science of giving, we looked into whether there’s another possible upside to doing good: physical attractiveness. It may seem surprising, but across three peer-reviewed studies, we found that others rate people who give money or volunteer for nonprofits, give to their friends and even register as organ donors as more attractive. We also found that more attractive people are also more likely to give in various ways. While our findings may raise eyebrows, we actually weren’t too surprised – the personal benefits of being generous are well established in our field."

LIFESTLYE  For when there's pie, there's hope ~ Pie queen Stacey Mei Yan Fong is baking a pie for every state (and we totally want a slice): "The project is at once wildly ambitious, and extremely whimsical. Scrolling through Fong’s Instagram, and reading her online pia-ary (that’s her pie-focused diary), it’s clear just how much research, care, and thought — not to mention travel — has gone into each of the 44 pies Fong has baked and given away so far. In South Dakota, Fong took cues from the Dakota, Lakota, and Nakota tribes, and constructed a rice pudding pie, the pudding made with wild rice, fortified with homemade sunflower milk. Fong met the couple who would later receive her Oregon pie (it was marionberry and pear, topped with a salty hazelnut crumble) while the three were playing beer pong and listening to Springsteen at a mutual friend’s house ... To read through Fong’s blog and scroll her Instagram lends a window into the mind of someone who believes deeply — and beyond any cliche — in the power of food as a means to connect, bridge divides, and express love."

HEALTH  For when you're reconsidering that standing desk ~ Working from home with unequipped furniture has done a number on all of our backs: "Seven months (and counting) into an indefinite period of working from home, the consequences of slouching and hunching are beginning to show. I’m  in an ergonomic hell of our own making, completely unequipped to interior - design my way out of this problem. In cramped apartments and houses unfit for proper offices all across the country, homebound employees are rigging all sorts of bad setups from which to work for 10 hours per day. 'I had been sharing the kitchen table in our tiny apartment with my wife throughout the spring and summer; it was not a good setup. My neck and back hurt from looking downwards at a tiny laptop screen all day' ... If it’s possible that we’re all doing this for another six months, year, 12 years, whatever, the atmospheric vibe had to give a little, in favor of comfort and a functional spine."

WELLNESS  For when you're not waiting to live your best life ~ Coming to terms with loss may help improve your relationship with life: "But remember, too, that just as there is deep time behind us, there is also deep time ahead. Any creatures that might still exist in five billion years when our sun dies will be as different from us as we are from the first single-celled bacteria. Deep time enables us to grasp our destructive potential: in just two centuries of industrial civilisation, with our ecological blindness and deadly technologies, we have endangered a world that took billions of years to evolve. Don’t we have a responsibility to preserve the life-giving potential of the Earth for the generations to come? At the same time, situating ourselves in the grand expanse of time helps put our mortality in perspective. We are just a passing moment in a far bigger, longer narrative."

a special note from HQ 👋

Exactly two years ago, we nervously hit 'send' on our very first newsletter and crossed our fingers for the best. Fast forward to today, we're completely in awe of how our simple hope to make getting sleep easier has grown into a grander vision to transform nighttime routines for the better. We can't express our gratitude enough that you've chosen to spend your nights with us, and we're proud of even the tiniest impact we can make whether it's finding you some respite in the daily chaos or squeezing in a smile before bedtime. And along the way, we've appreciated the opportunities to meet and support so many fellow founders also aspiring to make a difference in how we take care of ourselves. The kind words and passion from this community continues to inspire us, and we're excited to listen, learn, and explore more ways to bring you wellness in the many nights to come.

From our inbox to yours, thank you and sweet dreams always 💤💕
