tonight's pick-me-ups

Things we're doing to unwind and get cozy before bed tonight:

💻 Setting the mood. Welcome the new month with festive tech backgrounds from The Everygirl. Fill your screen with cozy Fall vibes, including a November to-do list!

🧘🏽‍♀️ Being mindful. Creating a meditation routine is an amazing way to enhance mental clarity. Begin your practice with the loving-kindness meditation that lifts you up from a bad day
as well as these other types.

🤞 Living with uncertainty. The future might be unknown,
but some practical and therapist-approved tips, such as writing a list of uncertain times you’ve already gotten through, can help you overcome fear of what’s going to happen next.

🛋️ Staying in. There's no better time to
transform your home into a calming, restorative sanctuary. Keep what's important, purge what isn't, and invest in items that give you good vibes.

Reads when you're up late anyway. Here are tonight's round-up for every occasion:

 WELLNESS
For when you're going off the grid ~ Contrary to popular belief, it's okay not to be on the internet all the time (psst especially today): "Reading every last tweet and news story about the coronavirus or police brutality or presidential election malfeasance only gives you the illusion of control. Bearing witness is important, but so is your mental health. Infinite scrolling can feel like a stand-in for real action. It’s not. What I could actually do was donate money to causes I believe in, register to vote in my new home, and try my best to be present in my own life. Now, months later, I’m working online and out of my bubble ... Ahead of this election, vote. Then consider logging off. The events of the world will unfold whether or not we are watching them every step of the way."

RELATIONSHIPS  For when you want to leave a message ~ Voice note dating is on the rise. More personal than texting and less awkward than a phone call, it's a great way to get to know a potential match: "'Voice note dating is one stage up from communicating by text message, but one stage down from being brave enough to actually have a conversation face-to-face or on the phone,' says relationships psychologist Emma Kenny. 'It allows you to take the relationship to a different level and feel more intimate without any more bravery.' Kenny adds that in today’s 'time short' society, some people find that they can get more from a 30-second voice note than a block of text. Kenny thinks that gaining a better understanding of someone’s tone and humour before meeting can offer better insight into the kind of relationship you may have, too. 'Anything that can reduce that anticipatory anxiety, and just make you feel like you know the person a little bit more is going to be helpful.'"

FUN  For when it's bring your cat to work (every)day ~ Whether you want it to be or not. During the new WFH norm, many have discovered that their cats are obsessed with sitting on their laptops: "'Your cat probably wants some of that attention, and they know that the best way to get it is to come between you and your screen' ... If they just want company, make sure you pet them and play with them throughout the day. Unless you know your cat pretty well, this process might take some trial and error, but figuring out what they want and how else you can provide it should help keep their noses off your webcam screen. But above all, have some sympathy for your cats during these trying times. If they were once accustomed to having the place to themselves during the day, their past routines have been disrupted this year too. As far as they know, any time you’re in the same place is fair game for them to try to hang out with you."

SLEEP  For when there's always time for a nap ~ Burnt out from 2020? Same. Opt for a 20 minute snooze rather than another cup of coffee: "Taking a nap can help you get through the day and offer a natural rejuvenation right after lunch, when that afternoon slump sets in ... '[Naps] can increased focus and that feeling of being in the zone.' A nap, and adequate sleep in general, will make you quicker on with reaction times. Grabbing some brief shut-eye can reinvigorate you so you are better equipped you are to absorb knowledge. To get the most out of your brief sleep, carve out a space that is inviting and separate from other responsibilities. [Rebecca Robbins, a postdoctoral research fellow at the Harvard Medical School] suggests closing the blinds, surrounding yourself with cozy bedding and visuals. During the shorter and colder winter days, a brief, warming nap may prove more tempting than a cup of coffee."

Use the FORD method when you don’t know what to say in conversation:

F - Family (Their S/O, kids, siblings, pets, family traditions)

O - Occupation (What do they do? How did they get into it? Where did they go to school?)

R - Recreation (What do they like to do?)

D - Dreams (Ask about their goals, dreams, and aspirations)
