Reads when you're up late anyway. Here are tonight's round-up for every occasion:

CAREER  For when we're ready to ditch the 8-hour work day ~ Post-pandemic life has many questioning the future of how we work. With offices closed and commuting cut down drastically, does it still make sense to work the typical 9-to-5 schedule?: "According to research from Stanford University, output and creativity sharply decline after 50 hours of working in a week. And it only gets worse the more you work. In fact, people who work a 70-hour workweek are likely to produce nothing during those 15-20 extra hours. The problem with long workdays isn’t just that we’re spending too long at work. It’s that we’re trying to spend all that time productively. The human brain is more like a muscle than a computer. You can’t load it up with tasks without giving it breaks and proper time to recover. The good news is that you can cut hours from your day and still hit deadlines, make meaningful contributions, and stay connected to your team. Even better, working fewer hours — whether it’s a four-day workweek or shorter days — has been shown to increase productivity, inspire creative ideas, and keep teams happier and healthier."

RELATIONSHIPS  For when tensions are rising ~ This past year has been filled with political unrest and deepening rifts with people we love over differing views, but meaningful conversations can help heal wounds if both parties are willing to make the effort: "If you find yourself fighting with a friend over politics, or frustrated and furious with your nearest and dearest over whom they're supporting for president, you're hardly alone. A recent survey shows just how much the nation's bitter political divide is causing social splintering and taking a toll on friendships. Even decades-long relationships have been caving under the pressure, giving new meaning to 'social distancing' ... A little more listening to understand, a little less trying to convince, and a lot more intellectual humility would do everyone a world of goo. Experts said it's more conversation — not less — that's needed, if the nation is to heal its blistering divide. But it has to be healthy, productive conversation."

INSPO  For when you miss the sunshine without daylight savings ~ Meet the woman supercharging the solar industry. Kristal Hansley is the first black woman to launch a community solar company: "She’s the CEO of WeSolar, a community solar company providing affordable energy to low- and moderate-income families. Hansley says she became the first Black woman to launch a solar company when she founded WeSolar ... Of course, Hansley is not your ordinary CEO. She didn’t come from a history of generational wealth. Her family hadn’t already created a solar empire for her to inherit. She did this on her own. (Well, perhaps her grandma helped a little when she passed on that passion so many moons ago.) Now, Hansley is channeling her own energy back into the Black community, which the fossil fuel industry has long exploited through pollution and deceit. Maryland is only the beginning — WeSolar plans to soon expand to cities around the country."

LIFESTYLE  For when you want to cook up an escape ~ While actual travel may be off the table, you can still explore new places by tasting your way through delicious and culturally-rich cookbooks: "Years before I ever stepped foot in Rome or the Chianti Valley, I traveled there by reading cookbooks. I pored through Ada Boni’s Italian Regional Cooking, committing pictures to memory so that one day I might, say, set up my own wood-fired rotisserie and prepare three different types of fowl at once, too. I learned from the photos in midcentury cookbooks how fresh anchovies and piles of sunbaked sea salt are harvested in Sicily. In this moment, I find the kind of escape that cookbooks offer to be especially welcome ... The best cookbooks are so much more than recipe collections — they’re oral histories, documentaries, time capsules, love letters, geopolitical texts, nature guides. And we, as readers, deserve to see more of them from more parts of the world, written by the people whose stories they tell. I’m convinced that it’s how we’ll become better cooks. At the very least, we’ll get to travel a bit."
