tonight's pick-me-ups

Things we're doing to unwind and get cozy before bed tonight:

🎨 Channeling our nervous energy. 2020 has been a year, but redirect those anxious feelings into new hobbies and habits, such as joining a cause you care about that lets you decompress while also keeping your momentum going.

💐 Prioritizing our work wife. While you may not get to see your work besties IRL,
show them you care without breaking the bank with thoughtful gifts like personalized garden succulents and home office candles.

🍵 Sipping on self-care. Explore the ritualistic act of
making and drinking a warm cup of tea with the added bonus of calming your nerves. We especially love the fresh taste of mint and the spice from ginger.

🤔 Living large. Self-reflection is a big part of making a happier life for yourself. Start by
incorporating creative inspiration into your routine on a regular basis. Hint: sing and dance your heart out.

Reads when you're up late anyway. Here are tonight's round-up for every occasion:

 FASHION
For when your style makes a statement ~ While your fashion choices at the polls last week might not have been your first priority, others used it as a platform to make symbolic and powerful declarations: "Whether it be suffragettes or civil rights activists, fashion has always played a role at the polls. While in 2016, a wave of women voters wore white suits, in tribute to the suffragette uniform, this election cycle seemed more focused on comfort and stability — especially for in-person voters faced with multi-hour waits. And subtler, more personal forms of self-expression prevailed. For designer Ophelia Chen, a first-time voter who became an American citizen last year, she wore something that, she says, 'symbolizes me as a minority woman,' She chose the same hot-pink outfit (from her brand Bobblehaus) that she wore for the Women’s March this year, including a matching bucket hat 'to represent my generation Z,' and, of course, a mask."

CAREER  For when you're always on the go ~ As a society, we feel the need to 'always be working' no matter the circumstances. We tend to push forward without ever really taking a step back to ask why we feel this way: "We schedule our self-care in our bullet journals, make self-care, too, an achievable and quantifiable goal whose progress we can track, so that it, too, becomes work: Drink this much water, sleep this many hours, exercise this much, give yourself a sticker when you’re done ... So to try to tease out why I feel so conflicted about my own unsteady desire to work, I turned to three of this fall’s big releases. There’s Get Organized With The Home Edit, Netflix’s latest organizing show. There’s Anne Helen Petersen’s new book Can’t Even, which traces the rise and crescendo of what Petersen has dubbed 'millennial burnout.' And like a message in a bottle, there’s Audre Lorde’s Cancer Journals, now celebrating their 40th anniversary."

SELF  For when your followers aren't your friends ~ We may be guilty of following people on social media that we can't stand. However, it's when you start making comparisons and feeling down about your own life that it becomes a bad thing: "For some of us, despite logging on with innocent intentions, spending time browsing Instagram or scrolling Twitter can quickly turn into stoking flames of resentment and doling out judgment over digital bad behavior. The celebrity posting non-stop 'relatable' content from his second home in Martha’s Vineyard, the Cool Girl who’s somehow been clubbing her way through the pandemic: All of these people, and more, are prime subjects of the hate-follow, the practice of following and keeping online tabs on someone who you can’t fucking stand. According to experts, we’re socially hardwired to look at other people’s lives, even other people we dislike ... Self-inquiry, and honesty, is essential in assessing whether or not you need to cut hate-following out of your life."

CULTURE  For when you need a good laugh ~ It's high time we find a show that can bring us some good wholesome content and even a bit of hope for the future, which is exactly what this new HBO show does: "Nothing I’ve watched so far has felt quite so perfectly timed to this moment — in terms of capturing the best of what we’ve lost as well as giving us reason to laugh and delight and maybe even hope — as How To With John Wilson. How To is really in a universe all its own, blending impressive and often hilarious cultural reporting with quite moving personal introspection; it’s like a kind of poetry. I don’t know what more I’d want from six tight 30-minute episodes than the opportunity to meet a bunch of people — New Yorkers! My people! — who are as bizarre as they are perfectly ordinary, while also laughing a lot and crying a little ... How To With John Wilson is a humbling and very funny reminder that everybody stuck in this great big human soup has their own extraordinary/ordinary stories."
