Tauranga Boys' College Newsletter

25th September 2020

Robert Mangan,  Principal

Dear Parents, Caregivers & Friends of the College

Today brings us to the end of Term 3 and a well deserved holiday break for our boys and staff.

Term 3 has been another very productive and successful term with the shadow of COVID-19 and Alert Levels hanging over us.  Despite the uncertainty and restrictions of Alert Level 2, our boys have enjoyed a wide range of opportunities to achieve and succeed.  These opportunities have included sporting pursuits, competition and performance across a range of artistic endeavours.  The emphasis on academic achievement has continued with the vast majority of our boys embracing the challenge of our senior assessments last week.  Success in these assessments will stand them in good stead should NCEA external assessments be compromised by a recurrence of COVID-19 and a change in Alert Levels.  Our senior boys needs to be mindful that NCEA externals begin on Monday 16th November and of the need to maximise the time available to ensure they are thoroughly prepared to achieve their academic potential in 2020.  Education and academic qualifications are growing increasingly more important as we face very challenging economic times in the years ahead.

I remind you of the need to support your son with his planning for 2021, Years 9 - 12 selection of options for the academic year whilst Year 13, applications for tertiary institutions, university Halls of Residence, Scholarships or vocational pathways and careers.  Boys are notorious at leaving things to the last minute so your prompting in planning and applying will be rewarded.

Term 4 begins on Monday 12th October with Year 13 having only 20 days of secondary schooling remaining.  The Term 4 calendar is full of a broad, rich and engaging curriculum of opportunities both within the classroom and in education outside the classroom and extra-curricular activities.  I take the opportunity to acknowledge our outstanding staff at the college.  All go beyond their core responsibilities to provide for your sons, from those in the front office, those who look after our facilities, the teacher aides and support staff and the teaching staff.  COVID-19 has presented many challenges over the last six months to which, in my view, we have responded positively and responsively, to minimise the disruption to your sons learning and strengthen his sense of engagement with the college.

I wish all our boys and staff a well deserved break over the next two weeks.  We look forward to welcoming our boys back on Monday 12th October, safe and refreshed and ready for the challenges that Term 4 will bring.

Kind regards,

R W Mangan
Principal

The Story of Basil

Inside the Horticulture glasshouse here at school, you can grow basil from seed to a mature plant in just over 4 weeks during the winter.  While photosynthesis is a chemical reaction, if you increase the temperature, you speed up the biology. Not only is the temperature of the trapped air increased (inside the glasshouse), the water being irrigated to the plant roots is also heated.

Agricultural and Horticultural Science is the application of biology, chemistry and physics to animal and plant management. People have got to eat and the world is willing to pay a premium for the quality products that New Zealand can produce.  50 kilometers from Tauranga Boys’ College is a 3 billion dollar industry that ships kiwifruit to the world.

You can take Agricultural and Horticultural Science in Year 10, Year 11, Year 12 and Year 13 at Tauranga Boys’ College. These subjects offer a pathway into the New Zealand primary industries.  There is considerable demand for students who can take science and apply it to add value.

October is Mental Health Awareness month and we have been asked by One Wave foundation to support the cause of raising awareness around mental health.

An ex TBC student, Grant Trebilco is the founder of this group and One wave's campaign is all around wearing fluro which brings happiness and brightness to our day, but also helps to bring awareness to mental health and the need to reach out.  We are very fortunate to have Grant at our Assembly on Friday 16th October to share his story with our boys.

So, on October 16th we are having a school-wide fluro mufti day to support One Wave and bring awareness to the idea that "it's ok to not be ok".  We will spend some time in Week one of Term Four letting the students know about this.  We will also be registering the school for the students to demonstrate ideas on how to" free your funk" and will set a staff challenge around this too.
TITANS TRUST
Sport Support Fund

The Titans Trust would like to help families who are in need of some financial assistance so that your boy may play sport and they have set up a generous Sport Support Fund.  For you to access this you need to follow these steps:
  1. Email sport@tbc.school.nz
  2. State the Sport / Team you are involved with and the subscription fee
  3. Identify briefly your reason for support, either loss of job or personal financial circumstances.
The Sport Support Fund will guarantee payment for the subscription fee i.e. Rugby Junior $70, Senior $90, Football $80 - $110, Basketball $120, Hockey $140 (approximate costs).

The Sport Support Fund will also consider payments for Tournaments and inter-school games.  As a school we respect the fact that it is often hard to ask for help but if it makes a difference for your son then I urge you to contact us and assure you this will be treated as a confidential matter.
HEALTH & WELLNESS
HPV Immunisation
High School Catch Up Programme

Our senior boys will continue to be offered the opportunity to be involved in the government funded HPV (human papilloma virus) immunisation programme.  Many students will have had their HPV vaccine at Intermediate, however many also missed out.  We began this catch up programme in term 3 last year and continued in term one 2020.  This will conclude for the year on 12 October 2020

Some facts about HPV:
  • HPV is a virus that causes HPV cancers in both males and females
  • Nearly 8/10 people will be exposed to HPV in their lifetime
  • HPV vaccination is being very effective at protecting against this virus
  • It is now FREE for males up to age 26
A consent form is required to be filled in and signed by a parent /caregiver if under 16 years old prior to the vaccination taking place, however, all boys are strongly encouraged to discuss this with parents / caregivers despite being allowed to self consent over 16 years of age.  The consent form contains detailed information and advice.
