The UK’s A Level grading fiasco has cast algorithms in the limelight for all the wrong reasons. As EdTech doubles down on intelligent software that makes automatic judgements on learning and teaching, we propose seven principles for ensuring these tools behave as intended: transparency, explainability, proximity, expert input, human overrides, global maxima and true personalisation.
