Ecological & Conservation Matters

Elephant Collaring:

#WorldElephantDay is celebrated every year on the 12th of August. It is a day whereby we are able to create awareness of the incredible giants and show the connected and collaborative efforts that we all go through in order to protect this species.

The Timbavati is proud to support a great NGO such as Elephants Alive who go through great lengths to protect these magnificent mammals. During the month, the Timbavati and other partners assisted in the recollaring of three iconic elephant bulls, General, Gower & Proud, who provide informative data on their home ranges and movements throughout the Greater Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area (GLTFCA). A big thank you to all who were involved on the day. Your conservation efforts go a long way!

Rhino Rescue:
A sad day for the Timbavati as a young rhino calf needed to be captured and taken through to Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary. The mother was sadly another poaching victim. This young rhino calf of only 2 months, would not be able to survive on his own, however we feel comforted by the fact that he is now in good hands.

Do follow the Care for Wild Facebook page to receive updates on this calf's progress.

Security Matters

Global Conservation Corps Blog - Becoming a Ranger: Annetjie Mkansi Shares Her Story

We are extremely proud of this young lady and her determination to go beyond all limits. In a male dominant field, she has proven that she will stop it at nothing to be able to protect wildlife which she loves so dearly.

For those who may not know her, Annetjie is one of the Timbavati's Central Control Room Operators who recently had the opportunity to take on her dreams to become a field ranger. Her successes showed that she was the only lady out of 13 others to make it through this phyical training by the Southern African Wildlife College.

A big thank you to the Global Conservation Corps for supporting her dreams and awaking her self belief and self confidence. She is another strong woman within our industry who we are so excited to see shine.

Well done Annetjie.

Giving Greens - Project Update

Thanks to the generous donation of the Global Conservation Corps, we have begun with our first netted vegetable garden! We are extremely excited to have fresh produce being provided to our hard-working rangers.

Follow the progress!

Community Matters

Netted Garden Upgrades:

Growing Greens Progamme - What an exciting week it has been for us! So wonderful to get back out into the school environment and educate the young learners of Chayiwe Primary School about the importance of becoming self sufficient through growing organic vegetable gardens.

Our mother hub has been producing such amazing seedlings, now we can share them with our schools. Karen and Bongani are using their knowledge of water-wise gardening and healthy soil promotion, to actively get these learners involved!

Well done Team!
@ASpringOfHope

Do you want to contribute to this awesome programme? By donating as little as R30.00 you could have 30 seedlings of organic healthy veggies planted at our schools!

Contact us for more info! Foundation@timbavati.co.za

SAME Netted Garden Extension:

The Timbavati Foundation will be assisting South African Medical Expeditions (SAME) in the extension of their current netted vegetable garden, as well as a new irrigation system, more growing beds and a pressure pump.
The centre is feeding over 150 children a day!

We can't wait to see the finished section!

Winter Warmers Campaign 2020:

The Lowveld has experienced some of the coldest winter days in years this season, and through the supportive families of the Timbavati, we were able to shed a bit of warmth to those in need through The Timbavati Foundation's winter warmer campaign.

Over the course of a week, the South African Medical Exp (SAME) Children's Centre assisted with distributing preloved children and adult clothing to the vulnerable families in the Sigagula community.

A total of 56 homes were reached of which 280 beneficiaries were provided with warm essential items.

A huge thank you to the Watt-Pringle and Naylor families for the generous donations, as well as to SAME for assisting in the handout and identification of these vulnerable families.

Together we can do more!
Do consider donating to our Foundation during this hard time. See their page for more details on the projects they are running.

COVID-19 Response projects:

1. Face Masks
We are running a fundraising campaign to raise funds to provide our matrics with washable facemasks so they can safely get on with their education.
Through Nourish, we are supporting a local seamstress to produce these essential PPE items.

See the images below.
Please consider supporting the Timbavati Foundation? Any humble contribution makes a difference in the lives of many.

Lodge Matters

The Timbavati awaits your visit!

With recent news from our president, South Africa is moving into level 2 of lockdown, meaning inter-provincial leisure travel is permitted. The Timbavati is home to a number of magnificent commercial lodges and camps, why not make it your destination of choice for your next getaway.

Check out our website to see our lodges and what they have to offer.

Simbavati
Cheeky, playful and fascinating 🐒
All around the Timbavati you’ll see troops of Vervet Monkeys communing with nature, and with our human community. You can expect some interaction with these playfully mischievous primates as they swing on the trees that shade the beautiful decks of Simbavati River Lodge.

An afternoon with two cheetah brothers!
We where very fortunate to spend the most part of yesterday afternoon with two cheetah brothers actively on the hunt.
After two attempts on a family of kudu they eventually managed to bring down a warthog making short work of the unfortunate warthog, but at least a successful hunt for these two speed machines.
Here is something you don't see every day! Kambaku Lodges finding a cheetah up a tree! Cheetah are more commonly seen on the ground but from time to time they may want to feel what it feels like to be a leopard for a day. Best view in the house.

Lodge Staff Food Parcel Drive:

With TERS no longer supporting our industry, we are needing the support more than ever.
The Timbavati Foundation, together with Hlokomela, is assisting 150 lodge staff families with much-needed food parcels. Each food parcel supports up to 4-5 people in a family for over 3 weeks!
Despite the hard times, the lodges assisted in delivering these parcels.

We cannot thank these amazing NGOs enough for their support!

We aim to keep this drive going, as this support is needed now more than ever. Please keep an eye out for our GivenGain page and contribute any humble penny.
