About me
I was born in Stoke- on -Trent in 1932. My father worked on the railways and the family moved every four years During the War, I was evacuated and went to stay with my grandparents in St Anne’s. The one good thing Hitler did, was bring me to St Anne’s where I first met David.

I went to teacher training College in Derby and then met up with David again, who had just finished his national service in the Navy. Soon, I was teaching, and David was a civil servant. We married in 1956.

David's work brought us to Beverley, he worked for the local government and become the Chief Executive Officer, while I taught at St Mary’s School for just over 20 years.

I have two sons: Christopher, who works for the railways in Derby and Michael who is over in New Zealand with his wife and children Matthew and Joshua.

My connection to St Mary’s Church
I grew up in the Baptist church and was always very involved. When we moved to Beverley, we became part of the Baptist Church here. But sadly, it closed. We didn’t really want to travel to church in Hull with two small children, and as I was already leading the family service at St Mary’s with Dr Rose, we thought we might give it a try.  The vicar, Stephen Walker, welcomed us with open arms and said that David could receive communion even though he was not confirmed, which was quite something in those days. We've been going to St Marys ever since.

My passions
I enjoy hearing from friends and family, both near and far. I'm now very dependent on the telephone to keep in touch. Family is incredibly important to me as is my faith.

What encourages my faith
The Saturday Prayer Group encourages my faith. Being able to pray together and encourage one another is important. We pray for those can we know personally as well as those who are on our prayer list and have asked for prayer. If you would like to join us, you'd be very welcome, it is a small group that meets at Wylies Road at 10:30am on a Saturday morning.
Harvest Festival - 4th October 2020
We will be celebrating Harvest Festival on Sunday 4th October 2020.

We would like to contribute to the work food bank but it is difficult to deal with food in the present climate so we would like you collect cash in clean jar / margarine pot /
smarties tube and bring it to church for harvest.  We will give the cash to the food ban who can then distribute to those most in need.

If you are not able to attend the service you can drop your donation into church on Sunday afternoon (4th October) between 2-4pm
Welcoming a new member to our team
We are welcoming Anne Almond to St Mary's to serve her curacy.  She will be with us for the next 3/4 years as part time assistant curate. Her licensing will take place on Monday 28 September at 7.30pm and will be shared by video to the church family.
Study Groups
Fellowship / Bible Study groups are starting up again after a summer break. If you would like to be part of a group (on zoom or in socially distanced) please get in touch - stmarys.beverley@gmail.com
New Study Course - Goliath must fall
You are welcome to join us for the sessions below
(even if you have not made it to other sessions)

Put aside what you may think about the classic David vs. Goliath story.

In Goliath Must Fall, Giglio shows us how to dwell on the size of our God, not the height of our giants. Once we understand the source of our giants, we can ensure us that whatever our affliction is, it will fall before the power of Jesus.

  1. Bigger Than Your Giant

  2. Dead but Still Deadly

  3. Fear Must Fall

  4. Rejection Must Fall

  5. Comfort Must Fall

  6. Anger Must Fall

  7. Addiction Must Fall

  8. A Table in the Presence

  9. Fuel for the Fight

Those who are joining us for the discussion group can do so over zoom. Don’t worry if you cannot make every session. These discussion groups will take place on a Thursday evening using the following link:

Prayers for the week beginning
Wednesday 16th September 2020

(broadcast each evening on Facebook)

A simple form of evening prayer and candle lighting *

At St Mary's we would like to invite you to join us in a short time of prayer every day at 7pm. It involves lighting a candle and placing it in the window and then saying the following prayers as individuals or as households.  You can join with others in these prayers on our Facebook page.

The Lord almighty grant us a quiet night and a perfect end. Amen.

Our help is in the name of the Lord
who made heaven and earth.

A period of silence for reflection on the past day may follow.

O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now
and shall be for ever. Amen.

The following may be listened to Psalm 121

The reading for the day (see below)**

The candle is lit and the following prayer is said
Heavenly Father, accept this burning candle as a sign of faith and love.
Like this candle, bring light into our world
Even as this candle is lit may we know your presence
and be consumed in the warmth of your love.
In your mercy, Lord hear our prayer.

In peace we will lie down and sleep;
for you alone, Lord, make us dwell in safety.

Abide with us, Lord Jesus
for the night is at hand and the day is now past.

As the night watch looks for the morning
so do we look for you, O Christ.

The Lord bless us and watch over us;
the Lord make his face shine upon us and be gracious to us;
the Lord look kindly on us and give us peace. Amen.

The readings are from Psalm 121

Wednesday 16th
I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
    where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord,
    the Maker of heaven and earth.

Thursday 17th

He will not let your foot slip—
    he who watches over you will not slumber;
indeed, he who watches over Israel
    will neither slumber nor sleep.

Friday 18th
The Lord watches over you—
    the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
the sun will not harm you by day,
    nor the moon by night

Saturday 19th
The Lord will keep you from all harm—
    he will watch over your life;
the Lord will watch over your coming and going
    both now and forevermore

Monday 21st: Psalm 122

I rejoiced with those who said to me,
    “Let us go to the house of the Lord.”
Our feet are standing
    in your gates, Jerusalem.

Jerusalem is built like a city
    that is closely compacted together.
That is where the tribes go up—
    the tribes of the Lord—
to praise the name of the Lord
    according to the statute given to Israel.
There stand the thrones for judgment,
    the thrones of the house of David.

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem:
    “May those who love you be secure.
May there be peace within your walls
    and security within your citadels.”
For the sake of my family and friends,
    I will say, “Peace be within you.”
For the sake of the house of the Lord our God,
    I will seek your prosperity.

Tuesday 22nd: Psalm 123
I lift up my eyes to you,
    to you who sit enthroned in heaven.
As the eyes of slaves look to the hand of their master,
    as the eyes of a female slave look to the hand of her mistress,
so our eyes look to the Lord our God,
    till he shows us his mercy.

Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy on us,
    for we have endured no end of contempt.
We have endured no end
    of ridicule from the arrogant,
    of contempt from the proud.
Wednesday 23rd: Psalm 124
If the Lord had not been on our side—
    let Israel say—
if the Lord had not been on our side
    when people attacked us,
they would have swallowed us alive
    when their anger flared against us;
the flood would have engulfed us,
    the torrent would have swept over us,
the raging waters
    would have swept us away.

Praise be to the Lord,
    who has not let us be torn by their teeth.
We have escaped like a bird
    from the fowler’s snare;
the snare has been broken,
    and we have escaped.
Our help is in the name of the Lord,
    the Maker of heaven and earth.
