Agents, Connecting and Publishing

Breaking into traditional publishing is just as challenging and difficult as ever, but for many, this is the path that aligns best with their publishing goals. New online opportunities to connect with agents and editors can make the current landscape even more complicated for new writers to navigate. From twitter pitches, mentoring programs like PitchWars, contests, to old fashioned querying, Farah Heron will outline the process and options to
sign with a literary agent, and get your first book sold to a publisher.

Registration is $10-15 & space is limited!  Click the link below to register.

Workshop will take place Sunday, November 8th, 2020, from 1:00 - 4:00 pm in ZOOM.

CLICK HERE to register
Please note that we will revert to our usual workshop prices as of January 1, 2021.  $15.00 for members and $20.00 for non-members.  W.C.D.R. members are eligible to attend meetings at the lower rate.

September's Page Turner

Agents and editors will often decide whether a book is for them by reading the first page of a manuscript. Many readers also decide to buy a book based on that critical first-page sample. Each month I post the first page of a book and you can vote on whether or not you’d read the book based on the sample.

Click HERE for September's Page Turner and see if you would turn the page.  Don't forget to cast your vote.
Write-in sessions hosted by M.C. Perron are held on Mondays from 7 to 9 pm on the Zoom platform.  WCYR members work on their own projects and enjoy social time during a break. Email info@wcyork.ca to receive the log in details.
WCYR Member Workshop Proposals:

The WCYR Board is seeking proposals from Members to present a 1-2 hour workshop during our 2020-2021 season.

Our Website WCYORK.CA is Changing

After more than 5 great years as our WCYR webmaster, Doug Owen has decided to take a break. We thank him for his dedication maintaining and improving our site during that time!

We’re also adding some new resources and plan future tweaks to make our website even more useful for WCYR members.

To start, migration to a new host site will be completed by September 30. Should you encounter any minor delays buying tickets to events—or signing up for activities this week—please bear with us.

Opportunities at Large

Wanted: Critique Partner

A Richmond Hill writer is looking for a critique partner to share constructive feedback on each other’s writing.

She seeks someone interested in reviewing her debut literary novel, an epic 90,000-word family saga moving from 1960’s India to 21st century Toronto. The story explores the bonds between mothers and daughters and lifelong friendships across religious divides, with a sprinkling of mythology and humour. The writer would like feedback on clarity, credibility, plot, and flow – and anything else!

She is happy to partner with someone who writes in any genre except sci-fi and horror.

If you’re interested in learning more, contact Rae Keen, Critique Group Organizer at rae.keen@sympatico.ca

Help Build WCYR’s Partnership with Libraries . . .

We’re looking for WCYR members to lead online seminars in partnership with libraries in York Region.

For this volunteer option, you’ll get the word out about the WCYR and yourself, gain experience in presenting online, and land a solid resume credit. If you’re published, you can tell participants about your books.

If you’d like to share your insights about the craft or journey of writing, please consider this opportunity.
You don’t need to be published to participate.

For details, please contact Rae Keen, Library Liaison, at rae.keen@sympatico.ca .
