The Department of Art History is pleased to welcome Dr. Erika Loic as Assistant Professor of Global Medieval Art this fall. Dr. Loic specializes in global medieval art history, manuscript illumination, and the Iberian Peninsula. She is especially interested in materiality and the effects of translating word and image across media, not only historically, but also in digital humanities initiatives.

Among the first cohort of the new Monuments Men and Women for the 21st Century Force is FSU Art History Phd student Sonia Dixon, a captain in the U.S. Army Reserves. She joins an elite team tasked with training and supporting soldiers to protect cultural property from destruction or damage during armed conflict.

Join us on October 22 at 4pm for a virtual Visiting Scholar Lecture. Museum professional Stephanie Johnson-Cunningham will present "Lessons in Equity from Culturally Specific Museums." Johnson-Cunningham is the co-founder and creative director of Museum Hue; a United Nations Human Rights fellow; and recipient of the Americans for the Arts 2019 American Express Emerging Leader Award.

Congratulations to FSU Art History alumna Carolina Alarcon (PhD ’18), who joins the faculty at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale as tenure-track Assistant Professor of Early Modern Visual and Material Culture in Art History.

Art History PhD students Sonia Dixon, Britt Hunter, and Sarah Mathiesen are co-chairing and presenting a panel on Thursday, 9/17 at the (virtual) 3rd annual Diversity and Inclusion in Research and Teaching Symposium put on by DIRECTO at Florida State University.

We are excited to welcome the new Academic Program Specialist for Art History, Emily Johnson. Emily joined our department this fall after 4 years in the College of Fine Arts advising group as an advisor for undergraduate students in Art History, Studio Art, and Interior Architecture and Design. She also has a background in Natural Resource Management, with animal management experience at the Nashville Zoo, and she is a current graduate student in Public Administration at FSU.

Associate Professor Michael D. Carrasco and colleague Joshua D. Englehardt have received a $249,850 collaborative research grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Congratulations to Dr. Amy Bowman-McElhone, who defended her dissertation "'Muck, Slime, and Ignorance:’ Mike Kelley’s Institutional Critique and Los Angeles’s Post-Sunshine Scene (1976-1996)” this summer. Dr. Bowman-McElhone currently serves as the Art Program Director, University Art Gallery Director, and is an Assistant Professor in Art History at Carlow University in Pittsburgh, PA where she curates transdisciplinary, justice-oriented exhibitions.

During her year as Scholar-in-Residence at Magazzino Italian Art in the mid-Hudson region of New York, Dr. Tenley Bick leveraged her experience in conducting virtual interviews with contemporary artists in Italy to address the intersections between art, anti-racist activism, and race politics in pandemic-era Italy.

Dr. Patricia Rose, founding chair of the Department of Art History and beloved professor of Northern Renaissance art, passed away on August 27, 2020. Her family has created an endowment in her honor to support the Rose Library and students who work there, while colleagues, friends, and alumni have sent letters, photos, and creative tributes in memory of her guiding spirit. These remembrances attest to Dr. Rose's dedication to generations of students and their scholarship.

Sheila Scoville, who entered the FSU Art History graduate program this fall, presented her paper “Colonizing Taste: A Mesoamerican Staple in Casta and Contemporary Art” on Tuesday, August 25 in the virtual conference Materializing Race: An Unconference on Objects and Identity in #VastEarlyAmerica

The Art History website now features a new Land Acknowledgment, a call to action intended to express gratitude to the host Indigenous Nations whose land you are visiting.

On Friday, September 18, the MCHS program is hosting an introductory conservation workshop, led by Stefanie Garafolo, preservation specialist with the Northeast Document Conservation Center. This free professional development opportunity is available for any student interested in art conservation, art history, collections management and museum studies.
