Exciting Events Happening!

We hope everyone is staying healthy and happy! We wanted to give you an update on what Sustainable Newton has been working on and what events are upcoming in the near future.

Virtual Screening and Panel Discussion of the film "2040"

The film features a solutions-based approach to how we can use the technology we already have to mitigate the enormous global issues we face. It's a story of hope, and a powerful tool to encourage people to take action. Sustainable Newton has arranged a virtual screening of this documentary as a rallying point for our own local conversations about climate action and sustainability opportunities in our community. The film will be available to stream free-of-charge from September 12-19, though we ask you to please consider donating through the event page to help cover the cost of events like this. Learn more about this virtual screening here:

Also, please join us for a live-stream panel discussion on September 17 at 7 pm ET with activists, local officials, and concerned citizens about ideas and solutions presented in the film and how we can apply it to Newton County. Learn more about the panel discussion here:

The film will be available to view free of charge for two weeks (Oct. 1-15). Learn more about this virtual screening here:

What Fuels You? A Discussion with Filmmaker Erika Gilsdorf

We first heard about the "What Fuels You?" project through the Climate Reality Blog earlier this year. And following those environmentally-themed short films soon led us to meet filmmaker Erika Gilsdorf. We discovered a shared passion for positive stories of people doing something for our planet. This fall, Erika will embark from her Duluth, MN home on a far-ranging trip across American to capture more tales of what she calls "cool people doing awesome things for the planet."

Join Sustainable Newton on Friday, October 9 from 11:00 am - 12:00 pm as we chat with Erika about her travel plans for the west coast this fall, and her intention to visit us here in Newton County next spring. Maybe she'll even share a few pics of her specially outfitted "tiny house" she'll be living in on her trek across our vast land. Learn more about this virtual event here:

24 Hours of Reality: Countdown to the Future

In October, Climate Reality Leaders around the world will unite for a 24-hour global conversation about the unprecedented challenges humanity faces from a global pandemic, the climate crisis, racial injustice, and deep inequities – and the once-in-a-generation opportunity for change we cannot squander. The challenges are real, and the time to act is now. But, reasons for hope have never been more evident.

On Saturday, October 10, at 4:30 pm Sustainable Newton invites you to join us for a Virtual Happy Hour to bring you into this vital discussion about the why and how for building a truly sustainable and equitable future with opportunity for all. Learn more about this virtual event here:
