MI-5: CLEAN ENERGY EVENTS
The 5th Mission Innovation Ministerial (MI-5) on 23 September 2020 will be an important milestone as Minister’s discuss the future of clean energy innovation cooperation beyond the first phase of Mission Innovation.
Over the next two weeks there will be a festival of online clean energy events attended by Ministers, CEOs, thought-leaders and innovators that provide an opportunity to engage in these important discussions. HRH Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman Al Saud will host a public session on the outcomes of the Ministerial on 23rd September from 16:30-17:00 Riyadh time that will be livestreamed on the Ministerial website.

Once registered you will receive a confirmation email with log in details and the list of events you have registered to attend. Attendees will be able to access the event directly from the website or use the Eve Virtual app (download from Google Play or App Store) to interact with other attendees. The events will also be broadcast live and uploaded on the event YouTube channel.

Wednesday 16th September
11:30-12:40 (Riyadh time): Achieving a circular carbon economy through multilateral collaboration
Exploring the Circular Carbon Economy and the opportunities for multilateral collaboration to accelerate key technologies. Speakers include Adam Sieminski, President, King Abdullah Petroleum Studies & Research Center; Fareed Asaly, G20 Energy Sustainability Working Group Chairman; Dave Turk, Deputy Director, IEA; Dolf Gielen, Director, Innovation and Technology Center, IRENA
Thursday 17th September
17:00-18:30 (Riyadh time): The journey of clean energy innovators: transforming innovative ideas into breakthrough solutions
This high-level virtual roundtable will take a deep dive into the journey of individual innovators to bring new clean energy solutions to society. This event will involve the 2019 and 2020 MI Champions, Youth innovators, as well as representatives of MI member governments.
Friday 18th September
14:00-15:30 (Riyadh time): Tracking progress and demonstrating impacts of clean energy innovation through innovation output indicators
Discussion on how to better track the impacts of clean energy innovation to help governments and the private sector to identify how and where to invest to accelerate clean energy innovations.
Speakers include: Patrick Child, Deputy Director General, European Commission; Kelly Sims Gallagher, Academic Dean and Professor of Energy and Environmental Policy, Tufts University; Ambuj Sagar, Vipula and Mahesh Chaturvedi Professor, IIT New Delhi
Friday 18th September
16:00-17:00 (Riyadh time): Accelerating clean energy technology innovation for a net-zero emission future
The IEA’s Energy Technology Perspectives 2020 (ETP2020) Special report on Clean Energy Innovation includes recommendations to government and industry for how to accelerate clean energy technology innovation. The IEA will present the finding of the ETP report, followed by a panel discussion with selected speakers from government, the investor community and innovators.

Monday 21st September
14:00-15:30 (Riyadh time): The Net-Zero Compatibility Initiative: 1000 Innovations Towards 60 Gigaton of Avoided Emissions
The Net-Zero Compatible Innovations Initiative is one of the activities in the global Mission Innovation Action Plan for 2018 – 2020, which aims to accelerate the development and deployment of innovative solutions that can help tackle climate change. The purpose of the initiative is to identify and support solutions (including technologies, products, services and business models) that are part of a net-zero development path.
Monday 21st September
16:00-17:30 (Riyadh time): Passing the tipping point: the next decade of clean energy cooperation
Join this high-level event involving Ministers and inspiring energy leaders to discuss the COP26 Presidency vision and how countries, business and citizens can come together aroudn cooperative action to fast-track global energy systems transitions.
Speakers include: Minister Juan Carlos Jobet, Chilean Energy Minister; Nigel Topping, High-level Climate Action Champion for COP26; Fatih Birol, Executive Director, IEA; Francesco La Camera, Director-General, IRENA.
Wednesday 23rd September
16:30-17:00 (Riyadh time): 5th MI Ministerial closing session: the Future of Clean Energy Innovation
HRH Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman Al Saud, as host of the Mission Innovation Ministerial meeting, warmly invites citizens from across the globe to join the concluding session, where they will be able to hear in person from Ministers about the outcomes of this important meeting, as well as perspectives on future plans for international cooperation on clean energy research and innovation.
Speakers include: HRH Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman Al Saud, Minister of Energy, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia; Lord Callanan, Minister for Climate Change and Corporate Responsibility, UK Government; Minister Juan Carlos Jobet, Energy Minister, Government of Chile.

Monday 28th September
11:00-12:30 (Riyadh time): Accelerating the energy transition with collaborative support for RDI projects. Kick-Off for ‘MICall20’ - Joint Call on digital transformation for green energy transition
The Joint Programming Platform ERA-Net Sustainable Energy Systems will build on the success story of MICall19 by announcing the multilateral Joint Call 2020 (MICall20) for cooperative RDI projects (research organizations and industry) on digital transformation for green energy transition to be launched in autumn 2020.
Monday 28th September
14.00 (Riyadh time): Innovation for zero carbon cities
With cities responsible for 80% of global GDP and 75% of energy-related carbon emissions, resilient and net-zero cities are necessary to maintain a climate-safe world. This dialogue between governments and cities will build support for the increased investment in urban innovation needed for net zero development:
 
Mission Innovation is a global initiative of 24 countries and the European Union to dramatically accelerate global clean energy innovation. As part of the initiative, participating countries have committed to seek to double their governments’ clean energy research and development investments over five years, while encouraging greater levels of private sector investment in transformative clean energy technologies. These additional resources will dramatically accelerate the availability of the advanced technologies that will define a future global energy mix that is clean, affordable, and reliable.
