As I mentioned in my pastor’s column last Sunday, with Father Vincent serving as our new associate pastor, Father John is now in residence at Holy Cross Parish. Along with the course on canon law and sacraments that he has been teaching at Notre Dame for the past several years, he was asked to teach a second course, an introduction to canon law, while continuing the liturgical assistance he has been offering for years to the parishes in the South Bend area of the diocese, along with whatever additional ministries the Congregation of Holy Cross will assign him in the future.
Father John has always had a keen interest in liturgy and sacraments, and so he took charge of maintaining, decorating, setting up and ordering supplies for the church, doing intakes for those seeking sacraments in the parish, presiding at the majority of our baptisms, weddings and funeral Masses, and coordinating the various liturgical ministries in the parish. As a parish, we benefitted from Father John’s well-prepared, inspiring and exhortatory Sunday and weekday homilies. As a member of the parish pastoral council and the parish staff and team, his input was insightful and helpful. On a personal note, I appreciated the many times that his advice assisted me in decisions I needed to make.
Fortunately, Father John will continue to offer assistance to the parish on a limited basis as a priest in residence. Please join me in thanking him for his two years as our associate pastor and the many contributions he made to our parish liturgical, sacramental and communal life.
