UMA WEEKLY UPDATE
September 18, 2020
Dear UMA Families,
Now that the school year is established and operating smoothly, we are pleased to launch our weekly school newsletter again.  Based on our flexibility to give all households, families and staff a choice of learning model, students are now learning every day in either a hybrid model or online each day.  Students are able to interact daily with teachers and friends in morning advisory meetings and synchronous class instruction.  In the afternoon, teachers and support staff are available to assist students as needed with assignments and projects.  As a reminder, current UMA parents and students were emailed a link to a Feedback Survey, please take a moment to complete by earlier next week.  This feedback will help us move  forward and make more opportunities available. As always, thank you for your ongoing support and interaction with the UMA community and experience.
ENROLLMENT AT UMA
We think Upper Mississippi Academy is pretty special and unique. If your family thinks so too, please let friends and neighbors know about our hands-on, experiential learning.  We still have open seats in all grades for the 2020-2021 school year.  Our website features a virtual tour for those interested in learning more about us.  Families interested in attending should complete an online 2020-2021 application.

Even better, share this newsletter via your social media using the options below.

Resources for Families

Families living in St. Paul and Minneapolis are eligible for free breakfast/lunch meals distributed at school sites and community centers. This program is funded thru the end of December.  Specific details can be found at the St. Paul and Minneapolis school district websites.  Another great resource is the Free Meals for Kids mobile app that helps families and kids in need find and access free meals at nearly 400 schools and other sites across Minnesota.

With school officially underway across the state of Minnesota, medical professionals are urging parents to be informed and aware of the guidelines for when their children can attend or need to stay home from school or child care. The COVID-19 attendance and exclusion guidance for school, child care and youth programming lays out a number of scenarios and appropriate steps for children, students, or staff.The COVID-19 Decision Tree for People in Schools, Youth, and Child Care Programs (PDF) includes a full list of the more common and less common symptoms associated with COVID-19, as well as guidance for individuals and their siblings or household contacts. MDH has also developed two additional parent-friendly resources to help navigate when children should stay home:

What's Happening in Class
When you rest you rust, so UMA Movement teacher Mr. Hoard expects his students to be active.  Recently middle school students were given an assignment to show all the different ways they are able to stay active while at home. The goal was to also show that there is no right or wrong way to be active, the goal is to just keep moving!
