Books Make Things Better

dlr Libraries are delighted to be involved in the Children's Books Ireland (CBI) reading campaign - Books Make Things Better! The campaign aims to support and promote the Irish children’s literature sector through the publication of the Books Make Things Better reading guide; a 32-page publication that highlights children’s books published in 2020 by Irish authors, illustrators, and publishers. The guide features:
  • snappy reviews of 108 children’s books, books in both the English and Irish language, for 0–18-year-olds
  • 123 Irish authors, illustrators and translators
  • 13 Irish publishers
  • original cover artwork by multi-award-winning illustrator Oliver Jeffers.
Limited copies of the guide are available FREE in all dlr Libraries or download a digital copy here.

You can also participate in the Books Make Things Better campaign by sharing a book at bedtime on Culture Night. An animated video and bilingual reading of To the Island/An t-Oileán Thiar by Patricia Forde and Nicola Bernardelli will go live on the CBI website at 5pm on Friday 18 September – tune in and share a bedtime story on Culture Night

Covering a vast range of subjects, including murder, bee-keeping, star-gazing and hair-styles, the aim of the book is to explore the history of Gaelic Ireland in the words used by its people.

New book by dlr Librarian, Carmel Kelly

Kevin Barry, by Carmel Uí Cheallaigh

On a dark November morning in 1920, Kevin Barry, head held high, marched to his death in Mountjoy Prison. He was the first and youngest person hanged during the Irish War of Independence. Born the fourth of seven children, the family was split between Dublin and Carlow, after the early death of his father. He loved playing Gaelic football, Hurling and Rugby. A brilliant student, he won a scholarship to study medicine.

Kevin also had another life, as a soldier in the Irish Volunteer Army with the sole purpose of obtaining a free independent Ireland. Then his two worlds collided and his part in the Monk’s Bakery Ambush sealed his fate. By sticking to his principles and making the ultimate sacrifice, he instigated the move towards a truce that would change the course of Irish history forever. What led this teenager to forego his bright future for the gallows?

Author Carmel Kelly is a Senior Librarian with dlr Libraries; Kevin Barry is her eight book, and is published by Mercier Press. Look out for online events during October with Carmel as part of Children's Book Festival.

Online dating can be a bit dodgy at the best of times. During Covid it’s downright nuts. That won’t stop Dunlavin’s Paddy Moriarty from finding love though. Gloves – tick. mask – tick. Hand sanitiser – tick. But will Marie tick all his boxes? Will she measure up to his rather large expectations?

The company that brought you Angels in the Park present:

Forgiveness by Owen Fitzpatrick
Food of Love by Lorna Kelly-Dalton

Due to current health regulations, a limited capacity of audience members per performance will be applied. Social distancing will be adhered to at all times. Audiences are encouraged to wear face masks during the performance. Anyone displaying Covid-19 symptoms should stay at home. Contact tracing will apply.

Wheelchair accessible. Supported by the Creative Ireland programme.
