Our health and safety is our priority

Since March, KCMS has developed a safety plan in line with guidance from provincial public health and WorkSafe BC.  We are monitoring the situation as we move through the fall, and will keep families updated on any changes as necessary.

“Our school does look a little different”, says Executive Director, Lucy Benwell. “We have lots of signage, waiting spots and hand sanitizer stations. My administration team and I have enjoyed greeting our visitors over the first couple of weeks to help them navigate the new process.  It's also important to respect the individual comfort levels of both student and teacher, and those who wish to are continuing to offer lessons online".

Our full visitor guidance is issued to all registered students - please take the time to read it in full and discuss with your student.  Some points to note:-

  • If you are sick, please stay home!
  • Middle school-age and above - don't forget your masks.  These must be worn in the common areas of the building and your teacher may request you wear one for your lesson
  • To avoid hallway congestion, please remember to arrive with just enough time to sanitize before your lesson. If you are more than five minutes early, wait at the spot on the drive or pathway/porch marked with your studio number
  • Parents are reminded not to park in the NO PARKING zone located across the front of the school. Leave a minimum of 3 metres between your vehicle and any driveway
  • KCMS is unable to provide supervision for students outside of their lessons. Parents must pick up students immediately after lessons are completed.
Thank you for helping us to

Artistic Director Stepping Down

It is with sadness that we announce the resignation of Eeva-Maria Kopp from her post as Artistic Director, a role she has performed for just over two years. "It has been a pleasure to have Eeva-Maria on the team", says Lucy.  "She has brought with her many skills and much enthusiasm to the role, planning many events and engaging with faculty and students with professionalism, compassion and an infectious joy of music making".

Eeva-Maria: "I feel very privileged to have served as Artistic Director at KCMS.  One of the highlights of the job has definitely been interacting with our students who hold a very special place in my heart. I sincerely thank my administration colleagues, faculty and board of directors - and of course the students and families - for all the programs and events we have shared.  May music making continue".

We are recruiting!  If you or anyone you know would be interested in the Artistic Director post, please contact Lucy for more information.

Welcome, new faculty members!

This year has seen many changes for us all. Sadly, our piano teachers Evelyn Gisbrecht, Sharon Pfenning and Graham Vink and oboe teacher Juanita Gomes have moved on from KCMS.  We miss you and wish you well.

We are pleased to welcome two new members:-

Jillian Broughton (flute):

Jillian completed her Bachelor’s of Music at the University of Victoria, studying with Dr. Suzanne Snizek, and then went on to study performance with Camille Churchfield at the University of Ottawa. While completing her university education, she played in a range of ensembles from orchestras and wind symphonies to pit bands for musicals, and in recording studios for pop and rock albums across Canada. Jillian has attended music programs such as the orchestral-focused Philadelphia International Music Festival and Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute . You might have also found her busking with her flute quartet, Tetraflute, along the ocean harbour of Victoria, BC!

Jillian believes that the skills learned in the study of music can transfer to success in whatever you choose to do in life. She seeks to develop confidence, creativity, and an appreciation for music within her students through the study of flute playing.

Paul Dykstra (piano):

Paul is a concert artist and teacher who has been doing just that for 40 years in Canada and the U.S. He has been on the Faculty of St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire, and is a member of the Royal Conservatory College of Examiners. During the past 20 years, his American students have played at Carnegie Hall, excelled in piano examinations and competitions and prepared for careers in music at such schools as Oberlin, Longy School of Music, Jacobs School of Music in Indiana, and auditioned at other major schools such as Juilliard and Curtis.

Paul's approach is different for every student and some students simply enjoy playing in styles other than Classical - as does Paul! Some of his varied concert achievements include concerto performances with orchestras, chamber music and solo piano, playing with artists including clarinetist Richard Stoltzman and the disco band Tavares (whilst cultivating a love for Progressive Rock and Heavy Metal). As a result of his multi-faceted musical experience, Paul can tailor a course of study for the most serious musician-pianist as well as the dedicated hobbyist or amateur. Recently relocating back to Kelowna to be with family, Paul is looking forward to contributing to the musical community here!
