This year has seen many changes for us all. Sadly, our piano teachers
Evelyn Gisbrecht, Sharon Pfenning and Graham Vink and oboe teacher
Juanita Gomes have moved on from KCMS. We miss you and wish you well.
We are pleased to welcome two new members:-
Jillian Broughton (flute):
Jillian completed her Bachelor’s of Music at the University of Victoria, studying with Dr. Suzanne Snizek, and then went on to study performance with Camille Churchfield at the University of Ottawa. While completing her university education, she played in a range of ensembles from orchestras and wind symphonies to pit bands for musicals, and in recording studios for pop and rock albums across Canada. Jillian has attended music programs such as the orchestral-focused Philadelphia International Music Festival and Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute . You might have also found her busking with her flute quartet, Tetraflute, along the ocean harbour of Victoria, BC!
Jillian believes that the skills learned in the study of music can transfer to success in whatever you choose to do in life. She seeks to develop confidence, creativity, and an appreciation for music within her students through the study of flute playing.
Paul Dykstra (piano):
Paul is a concert artist and teacher who has been doing just that for 40 years in Canada and the U.S. He has been on the Faculty of St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire, and is a member of the Royal Conservatory College of Examiners. During the past 20 years, his American students have played at Carnegie Hall, excelled in piano examinations and competitions and prepared for careers in music at such schools as Oberlin, Longy School of Music, Jacobs School of Music in Indiana, and auditioned at other major schools such as Juilliard and Curtis.
Paul's approach is different for every student and some students simply enjoy playing in styles other than Classical - as does Paul! Some of his varied concert achievements include concerto performances with orchestras, chamber music and solo piano, playing with artists including clarinetist Richard Stoltzman and the disco band Tavares (whilst cultivating a love for Progressive Rock and Heavy Metal). As a result of his multi-faceted musical experience, Paul can tailor a course of study for the most serious musician-pianist as well as the dedicated hobbyist or amateur. Recently relocating back to Kelowna to be with family, Paul is looking forward to contributing to the musical community here!

Ready to make music together!
As we all know, exposure to the arts is crucial to our wellbeing, and we look forward to sharing a full list of upcoming events as soon as we can. In the meantime, some of our performing arts community partners may have news to share in the coming months, and we wish them well. Take a look at the following links, some of which feature events involving some of our very own faculty members!
