La Cosecha-Special Edition on Farmworkers and COVID-19

This edition of Wachale takes a dedicated look at farmworkers across the country to acknowledge and hopefully spur action with those who, in predominately miserable conditions, for exceedingly low pay, with limited legal recourse, harvest much of the food we eat, especially the fruits and vegetables.  In many crops, particularly in the upper Midwest, the harvest season is coming to a close and many of the farmworkers who migrate will either continue on to another harvest in a different location or return to a home base, if possible. There continues to be a significant lack of articles written on MN, so below is a compilation of some of the better known news sources and their reporting on migrant farmworkers.

Virus’s unseen hot zone: The American farm

Across the country, fruit growers blocked testing of seasonal farmworkers and told those who caught the coronavirus to keep it quiet. County and state officials were largely unable to stop them.

Migrant farmworkers in New Jersey risk COVID-19 to stock your fridge

Every summer, thousands of temporary agricultural workers and their families arrive in New Jersey for the blueberry harvest. The state produces 40 to 50 million pounds of the fruit each year.
